People line up to receive a vaccine from the FEMA vaccination site in Florida City on March 7, 2021.
Before doors opened at a vaccination site in Florida City, Fla., on Sunday morning, hundreds of people had already lined up to get a jab — many not even eligible under state rules.
Julio Ligorria arrived at 8 a.m. He said he saw about 200 people already wrapped around the block and counting. Many had seen reports that, a day earlier, this vaccination site run by the Federal Emergency Management Agency had doled out doses to people who did not meet current state criteria, in part because of low demand.

About 50 people were vaccinated at a Florida site despite being ineligible
About 50 people were vaccinated Saturday at a site in south Florida despite not being eligible, according to a Federal Emergency Management Agency spokesperson.
It all began when “some individuals” arrived at a vaccination site in Florida City, about 40 miles south of Miami, and told staff they were health care workers, FEMA spokesperson Marty Bahamonde told CNN on Sunday.
Staff asked them for proof of their status, but “they were unable to validate that they were health care workers,” Bahamonde said.
“So the staff, trusting them and taking their word for it instead of turning them away, they gave them the vaccine,” Bahamonde said. “Those people then went out and told their friends, ‘Hey, I went in and just said this and got a free vaccine.’ And more and more people started to come in and then the word got out that people were getting vaccine who didn’t meet the governor’s criteria.”

What they’re reading on the Plaza level: As Florida’s Governor continues to defend himself against various slays related to his COVID-19 response and, now, vaccine rollout,
Ron DeSantis‘ role in the virus has been vindicating. The state’s numbers are lower than places with Democratic Governors, like New York and California, but its economy, saved from extended lockdowns, is thriving. No doubt Team DeSantis is already prepping news conference quips to tout their success.

On Saturday, as chaos ensued at a South Florida vaccine site, 494 people were vaccinated at the site, just slightly under the 500 daily allocation.
It took more than five hours of waiting in the sun with her 6-month-old baby and being rejected by five different staffers at Florida City’s federal vaccination site for Yanira Vázquez to finally get her COVID-19 shot.
Vázquez, who is a caregiver for a patient with Down syndrome, said she was turned away because the note she had from her patient’s pediatrician confirming her eligibility for a vaccine was on her phone and it was not printed. According to a Miami Herald reporter who witnessed it, Vázquez was screamed at by at least one volunteer at the site.
