was -- i shouldn't date myself like this -- at the time i was clerking there, because i clerked in this courthouse as well. and so this courthouse -- and the judges there and the chief judge, they are very, very familiar with high-profile cases, managing crowds, managing security. they have a wonderful relationship not only their own marshall, but with the, you know, metropolitan police department and all the different federal law enforcement agencies that the district of columbia who can be, you know, brought on if necessary. they also are very well equipped, or at least they have been in the past, to provide for media access to high-profile cases. they sort of pioneered the idea of a media overflow room, so that the media wouldn't necessarily have to be in the courtroom where they can't bring their laptops or their phones and, you know, be on the phone or typing in the courtroom. they created a media room --

Jose Diaz-Balart Reports

you're miami born and bred, raised guy. what struck you as a person and as a reporter? >> reporter: well, jose, it was a surreal experience to see this all unfold here at the federal courthouse. and to hear the judge say the people of the united states versus donald j. trump, and see the former president facing this indictment, i was in a media overflow room, i saw it through a video screen, i was able to see a head on shot of the former president crossing his arms and seemed frustrated to be there, he did not want to be there. especially as this indictment -- this arraignment got under way, it was his attorney that entered his not guilty plea on his behalf. also, the scene out here, to see, you know, demonstrators here outside of the federal courthouse, and that wild scene as the motorcade pushed out, we were surprised to see more of the streets had not been blocked off and to see those demonstrators, one in particular, go off in front of the motorcade and be pushed off

to me when i was in the courthouse. just that it wasn't that hard to get into the courthouse. at one point, i thought i was late. i went to the media overflow room. there was nobody there because there was plenty of seats left. yeah, i think part of that is that people didn't want, they thought they knew everything that there was to know about that story, the stories that we heard in the trial, mostly stories we've heard before. but again, i think there is real nuance here because i think trump did lose some of his power. certainly his agenda setting power when he lost the twitter account. when he lost his reach on social media. right, it does matter. it's not the totality of where he gets his political power from. >> this is the quote, this is you don't have to like the former presidents answers but you can't say you get, them kaitlin pressed him again, made news, a lot of news, that is our job. --

i don't agree with that. he is powerful because he says things that republicans, the republican base likes, which is where his power comes from. so i think there is an over correction in the other direction. you said that the other, day i thought it was interesting with the e. jean carroll thing. the ex president is being civilly tried for sexual abuse. feels like it should be a bigger story. >> yeah, no, it was so shocking to me when i was in the courthouse. just that it wasn't that hard to get into the courthouse. at one point, i thought i was late. i went to the media overflow room. there was nobody there because there was plenty of seats left. yeah, i think part of that is that people didn't want, they thought they knew everything that there was to know about that story, the stories that we heard in the trial, mostly stories we've heard before. but again, i think there is real nuance here because i think trump did lose some of his power. certainly his agenda setting power when he lost the twitter account.

after the shooting and saw there were no police officers waiting for him. he said if police had found him inside the church he was prepared to shoot himself. craig? >> any idea what the reaction has been to the tape from the jurors expect? >> reporter: i have only been able to go to the media overflow room where you really can't see. i was able to seedy lan roof yesterday. he's just looked silent, expressionless, looking down at the defense table the whole time. you can see wooden benches where the family members of victims are seated in the first couple of rows. so it's incred ed b krecredibly. you can sense the tension even in the adjacent room. there is a stark contrast

security camera footage and first responder testimony. in some cases the images are so disturbing the judge told family members there's no shame in having to step out of that courtroom. joining me from charleston is nbc's mariana guster. you got to see dylann roof via closed circuit tv. strike what you witnessed. >> reporter: as you mentioned, right now the prosecution is showing jurors these very graphic images of the crime scene, images of the victims, and i was just there a little earlier today in the courthouse, and you could sense the tension even in the media overflow room. dylann roof was wearing a black long-sleeved t-shirt, just a regular t-shirt, gray slacks. he's staring blankly ahead ignoring everything going on around him. you could see his lawyer whispering in his ear from time to time, i was also there when

who simply came to watch a race. deborah feyerick cnn, boston. >> alexandra field is following this for us. how did people inside react to the video? >> reporter: carol, when the jurors were selected for this trial they were warned that they were going to have to look at graphic images graphic video. the prosecution set the tone in their opening statements speaking in frankly excruciating details about the injuries that killed three of the victims at the finish line. when you saw them played out in court, even in the media overflow room where i was watching them it sends a chill up your spine. i think people were visibly moved even fellow journalists who had seen a lot of similar raw video, video that was deemed from the start too graphic to broadcast, not necessary to broadcast because it showed the extent of the suffering out there on boylston street. when you saw those images in the courtroom, when the victims were on the stand testifying to their
