cooler air blowing in from the atlantic, displacing this hotter air from africa that as been blowing up, according to the weather experts. the scientists who study climate change say this persistent heat this persistent drought which is causing havoc for farmers, are clear signs of the effects of climate change. kim? >> yeah, no doubt. al goodman, thanks so much. for more on this now, let's go to meteorologist tyler malden who joins us from the cnn weather center. we heard what al was saying there. just more and more extremes. what are you watching for? >> we're seeing this heat dome meander across western europe. it's not just western europe. as al mentioned, parts of the mediterranean are being encompassed in this heat dome, also northern africa too. this is a large area of high pressure that is leading to the record heat across much of the region. and the dry conditions, that is all leading to those fires. you can see that we do have a
al mentioned this just a second ago. the all-time record in the uk is 38.7 degrees. so if we top out at 39, 40 degrees in london, we break that record, that all-time record. that has led the uk met office to issue their first-ever red alert warning for the heat. that's the kind of heat and the kind of temperatures we're dealing with, kim. >> all right, thanks so much, tyler, appreciate it. i'm kim brunhuber. for our international viewers, "inside africa" is next. in north america," cnn newsroom" continues. we mentioned president biden is back home from his visit to the middle east, a trip now symbolized by a controversial fist bump with the saudi crown prince. we'll explain how the saudis feel about that image after a short break. some people have minor joint pain,
drop appreciable amounts of rain, and extremely heavy snowfall to the parts west. meanwhile, as we get into christmas eve, it's not going to be feeling much like christmas in the eastern third of the country as record heat builds up from the south. meanwhile, out west that area of low pressure producing the snow continues to push to the east and also causes the winds to pickup over the plains. we see more in the way of travel impacts across the west and the central portion of the u.s. as that system pushes to the east. what about that heat? it's not going to feel much like christmas this year. more than 100 records are in jeopardy this upcoming weekend. temperatures are going to be about 20 degrees above average by the time we get to christmas day. >> that's something. tyler malden, thank you so much. we'll be right back.
police officer kim potter. the jury will return this morning for the fourth day of deliberations. the jurors who are sequestered had deliberated for more than 24 hours in total over the last three days. earlier this week they asked the judge what happens if they can't reach a consensus. potter is facing two manslaughter charges in the fatal shooting of daunte wright back in april. she mistook her gun for a taser while trying to help arrest wright during a traffic stop. >> it could be a rare white christmas in a couple of major u.s. cities. here's meteorologist tyler malden. >> christine and paula, today is an extremely busy travel day because christmas is right around the corner. if we see any weather-related travel delays, it's going to be out west, as an area of low pressure continues to impact the west coast. so from the pacific northwest all the way down to california, do expect impacts to both ground and air travel because of that area of low pressure which will
driving conditions, too. mid to late week, there is a clipper system moving across the great lakes and ohio river valley that will be pushing into the northeast. we'll add to the winter weather woes here across this portion of the country in the days to come. roads mary? >> tyler, thank you very much for keeping a close eye on all of that. south korea says the latest missile test from north korea are "very regrettable actions. seoul held a meeting after the last missile testing. the missiles were launched from near pyongyang's international airport into the sea to the east. blake essig joins us live from tokyo with more on that. so the fourth time in a month that north korea has apparently tested ballistic missiles. everyone is asking what's going
in terms of pittsburgh, they realized their last snow event came up short. they did not expect or anticipate a refreezing event that took place after that snowfall and making many of those side roads basically impassable and just a frozen mess. so what they've done, according to the mayor in an announcement made on friday, they tried to improve their response, we saw it on sunday with plow trucks and snow removal equipment out and about on the streets and sidewalks. forecasters here expect up to a foot of snow in and around pittsburgh so the main concern is monday morning, though it is a holiday. school was not scheduled for today. there are folks who have to get to work, so authorities are concentrating on roads and highways. let's go to meteorologist tyler malden he joins me on the latest with the winter weather conditions. what are you seeing?
and lions fans going so far as to make detroit rams t-shirts to show their support. and lots of excitement surrounding this year's super bowl halftime show, featuring dr. dre, snoop dogg, eminem, mary j. blige and kendrick lamar. this is going to be the first time ever that the halftime show features hip-hop artists at the main act. >> so as andy mentioned, the heat could be a big factor in the game. los angeles is currently under a heat advisory and game day temperatures will be in the mid-80s. meteorologist tyler malden will take us through it. so just what's it going to be like there in the stadium? >> yeah, so it's going to be feeling springlike, if not summer like, as we get into this afternoon. as you can see behind me, the forecast is calling for temperatures to be around 80 degrees or so. as you can see. well, it looks like my graphic system here is not wanting to cooperate with me.
country. but on the west coast, a huge shot of rain and snow could finally put a dent in a long record-breaking drought there. here's meteorologist tyler malden. >> christine and laura, 8 feet of snow is possible for portions of the sierra nevada next week. that is why we have weather alerts for this region. a cold front is moving ashore. what this is going to do is force the winds to come on shore. this will cause an atmospheric river to set up, yet another atmospheric river, which is a large swath of moisture coming in off the pacific. and what happens once that crashes against the west coast, it produces a lot of rainfall and a lot of snowfall, too. so across the coast line of the west coast, we could see anywhere around 3 to 6 inches of rainfall, but then once you start getting up into the higher elevation, yeah, you could see 8 feet of snow across the sierra nevada.
feet of snow for the pacific northwest. the northern rockies and rockies as well. they are under a drought. the increase of the snow pack and the rainfall we will be receiving in the days to come is much needed. guys? >> tyler, thank you. staying out west here, a strong earthquake off the coast of northern california rattling a wide portion of the state, knocking groceries off shelves you can see there, shattering store windows near the epicenter. the 6.2 magnitude quake hit just after noon local time and was felt as far away as san francisco. they say no injuries or major damage was reported, though. all right. friends, collaborators, legends, carole king and james taylor in an unforgettable concert film, "just call out my name" sunday january 2nd, 9:00 p.m. only on cnn. ♪ this is how we shine. ♪
here's meteorologist tyler malden. >> the weather map behind me is extremely busy. so let me show you the two systems at play over the next 72 hours. system number one is the cold front that pushed offshore the east coast yesterday. behind it, lake effect snow and we could see up to 6 inches of lake effect snow up here across the great lakes and on into the northeast. but then we have a series of weather makers pushing across the northern rockies and the northern plains. this system could create north of 10 inches of snow across the highest elevations and also extremely heavy rainfall across the coast of oregon and washington. that system is on the move to the east. it's the one that's going to impact our travel on wednesday. it's going to impact our thanksgiving and it's also going to impact black friday, too. in terms of thanksgiving itself, trouble spots will be seattle, and then also houston all the way up through st. louis on to chicago as well as the areas around the great lakes. christine, paula, back to you.
