Briscoe Exhibit Looks At '70s, '80s-Era Westerns Through Historical Lens

Texas Public Radio
"Still in the Saddle" is the title of a new exhibition at the Briscoe Museum that examines westerns of the 1970s and 1980s.
For a guy who earns his spurs today writing about westerns, Andrew Patrick Nelson wasn’t a fan as a young boy.
“I grew up in the superhero and science fiction-saturated popular culture of the ‘80s and ‘90s,” Nelson explains. “Westerns weren’t something I really encountered until I started studying film in college. And once I started watching them, I just became hooked.”
Nelson’s writing on westerns concentrates on the time period following the classic era, which was defined by stoic riders, noble sheriffs, outlaws, and one-sided portrayals of Native Americans. By the 1960s, a new generation of filmmakers and stars turned Hollywood on its head following the collapse of the studio system, and audiences hungered for more complex storylines and portrayals of the frontier.

Weather and climate science affects every living thing on the earth – and severe weather can have a devastating effect on humans, animals, and agriculture. As we enter the summer, all eyes are on the Gulf of Mexico as storm season begins and the Texas coast braces for deadly hurricanes. How does storm prediction work? What new developments are being made in the accuracy of forecasting and measuring tropical storms, as well as those over land? Join us at our next Think Science virtual panel as we study storm prediction, and learn how signals from space (such as NASA's CYGNSS program) can help us on earth.

The Enduring Beauty Of 'Midnight Cowboy' And 'A Partnership Forged Out Of Despair'

/
Ratso Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman) sells Joe Buck (Jon Voight) on contacting a would-be pimp in "Midnight Cowboy."
In 1969, an X-rated movie filmed in Texas and New York shocked the world when it became a sensation, capturing the number three spot at the year’s box office, and eventually winning an Oscar as Best Picture. “Midnight Cowboy” stars Jon Voight as Joe Buck, a naïve Texan who leaves his home in Big Spring to seek fortune in the Big Apple as a male hustler catering to affluent women. Things don’t go as planned. The hapless Joe strikes out time and again, winding up broke, turning small-time tricks on 42nd street. Along the way, he befriends a low-life named Ratso Rizzo, played by Dustin Hoffman, fresh off his successful debut in “The Graduate.” The two form an unlikely friendship that helps them survive the harsh reality of the big city.

Santikos Hopes For 2021: '50 Percent Of Normal'

/
2020 was a dismal year for movie theaters. Amidst the coronavirus pandemic, the domestic box office plummeted 80% from 2019, as theatergoers stayed home in droves, opting to watch programs and movies on streaming platforms like Disney Plus, Netflix, and Amazon Prime.
Locally, San Antonio-based Santikos Enterprises also felt the pinch, despite being open since May with COVID-19 safety measures such as weekly virus testing for employees, and advanced hygiene and sanitization methods at its theaters. A normal year of revenue would have been about $110 to $115 million dollars, according to CEO Tim Handren. Last year’s take was only about a quarter of that. Not only is that bad for keeping the business open, but it also meant no profits were funneled into the San Antonio Area Foundation, which Santikos contributes to per the directive of the cinema chain’s late owner, John L. Santikos.

This year was supposed to be different.
The words echo on the lips of everyone you know. Exactly two weeks after Texas Public Radio moved into our new headquarters in downtown San Antonio, nearly all of us began working from home as our key crew of Norma Martinez, Steve Short, David Martin Davies, Lauren Terrazas, and Jerry Clayton, plus reporters and producers, not only kept the Texas Public Radio ship going, but brought new insight into the pandemic, racial tension, and an election that captured the attention of the world.
