The fundamental reason for this surge in unemployment is the economy's lack of growth. With over 11 million jobless workers, many Americans are tempted to look to the government for solutions. Yet, it is precisely because of the legacy of decades of government intervention in the market place that the U.S suffers from its current ec onomic malaise.
The Jobs and Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2003 that theHouse and Senate passed on May 23 contains some strong pro-growthelements, specifically accelerating the 2001 marginal rate cuts,lowering the taxation of dividends and capital gains and allowingbusinesses to accelerate depreciation deductions on theirinvestments.
