place is that they were under what one administration official described to me as the old paradigm. you know, the muslim brotherhood goes back to 1928. they've been the opposition in egypt for a long time. but there's a new, much more vaguely structured opposition -- to even call it structured would be an exaggeration. it's a new paradigm that is struggling to be born here within egyptian politics. so it might be that the vice president is negotiating with the wrong folks. and we don't yet know who the right folks are. so this has a ways to go before it fully plays out. i don't think the white house is confident that this will be enough. they don't know what's going to happen. there is no roadmap from here to the new egypt and the new middle east. and that's what makes this a terribly unsettling story for the obama administration but also a potentially exciting one
