Italy’s most important music event, the Sanremo festival, began yesterday night. The show, which inspired the creation of the Eurovision Song Contest, is the most watched event on Italian television, followed every year by around ten million people. The festival is a five-day event that takes place in the coastal town of Sanremo, Liguria, and this year it celebrates its 70th anniversary.
The contest was first introduced in 1951 as part of Italy’s efforts to speed up economic recovery in the aftermath of World War II and attract visitors to the coastal town. During the inaugural edition there were only three contestants, including Nilla Pizzi, Achille Togliani and Duo Fasano, performing around 20 songs. The 1951 contest was won by Nilla Pizzi with the song “Grazie dei fiori” and was broadcast on Rai, the state radio and one of the sponsors of the event together with the Sanremo casino, where the festival used to take place. After 1976, the festival has always been held at the Ariston theater, with the exception of the 1990 edition.
