Zhao Ting
Chloé Zhao, original name
Zhao Ting, (born March 31, 1982, Beijing, China), Chinese filmmaker who was known for absorbing and closely observed movies about journeys of self-discovery set in the American West. Her films delve into rarely explored strata of American society. For
Nomadland (2020), she became the first person of colour to win the Academy Award for best director.
Zhao’s father was an executive at a major steel company and later worked in real estate and equity investment, while her mother worked at a hospital. Zhao was uninterested in school in Beijing, preferring to focus on manga and movies. Although she spoke little English, in 1998 her parents sent her to England, where she attended the Sussex boarding school Brighton College from 1998 to 2000. She completed high school in Los Angeles and then enrolled in Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, where she studied politics, with a minor in film studies (B.A., 2005). Finding herself drawn to telling untold stories through film, she then attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts (B.A., 2010). Her graduate film was the short movie

On Sunday night, director Chloé Zhao became the first woman of colour to win an Oscar for best director and best picture, for Nomadland. She also became only the second female director in Oscar history to win the award.
Zhao's next film will be very different to the three she's made so far — a big-budget Marvel Comics Universe (MCU) blockbuster called Eternals, which will feature the MCU's first gay superhero and its first deaf one. Zhao approached Disney to direct, rather than being head-hunted to join the fold of the biggest franchise in the world...

The Oscar-winning film, “Nomadland,” has helped the state of South Dakota to receive an increase in tourism and bring an increase in sales to small businesses after millions watched the Chloé Zhao production.
Many attractions and locations that are shown in the film are real businesses in South Dakota, and even the state’s Tourism Department expects more visitors to come through over the next few months.
“Overall, what you’ll find is we certainly noticed that film drives a great amount of inspiration for consumers,” said Katlyn Svendsen, global media and public relations director for the department.

Chloé Zhao's Oscars look challenges China's beauty standards — Quartz

April 29, 2021
Although Chloé Zhao’s Oscars win has largely been censored in China, one less sensitive aspect about the event has nonetheless been discussed enthusiastically. That is her very chill, no-makeup look at the awards ceremony, where she simply wore an ankle-length gown and a pair of white sneakers.
While Chinese-born Zhao is not the only, or the first female, celebrity to go for casual at such a major event, her appearance has become a hit among many Chinese feminists, who say Zhao made them feel they can also ditch cosmetics and stop appealing to mainstream beauty standards in the country.

Hayward: Chinese Communist Party Asserts Control over Hollywood By Censoring 'Nomadland' Director Chloe Zhao

27 Apr 2021
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) appears to have a strange love-hate relationship with filmmaker Chloe Zhao, alternately praising her achievements and using its censorship powers to suppress all mention of her Oscar wins on Sunday.
It is hard to see why the CCP would decide to erase Zhao, who has not been a strident public critic of China’s authoritarian regime. It is much easier to understand the CCP’s desire to send Zhao, her American collaborators, and Hollywood a message about China’s increasing box-office clout, and Beijing’s willingness to use business interests as leverage to accomplish its political agenda. If a history-making Asian female director can suddenly become a non-person at the peak of her career, then no one is safe.

April 27, 2021
US road movie "Nomadland" emerged as the big winner at the Oscars on Sunday with three major prizes, including a history-making award for director Chloe Zhao, as Hollywood celebrated its most glamorous night with a unique pandemic-era gala.
Zhao’s drama about marginalised Americans roaming the West in vans was honoued for best picture, director and actress for Frances McDormand, who now is in elite company with her third Academy Award for performing.
No-show Anthony Hopkins pulled an upset to win best actor in the final award of the night, besting sentimental favorite Chadwick Boseman, who died of cancer last year. The unorthodox Oscars ceremony was moved from a Hollywood theatre to a glammed-up downtown train station to abide by strict Covid-19 protocols, and reunited Tinseltown A-listers for the first time in more than a year.

America continued to make classificatory history on Monday early morning when it announced that its Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had awarded one of its most coveted awards to a ‘woman of colour’ for the first time.
'Nomadland' director Chloé Zhao, understandably, is not complaining. She has received the coveted ‘statuette of (bright) colour’ as best director and, as she said in her acceptance speech, she has ‘always found goodness in the people’ she has met, people of no colour at all included. Good for her.

Follow all the action from the 93rd Academy Awards, as Hollywood's biggest night of the year gets underway
Hollywood's biggest annual night is finally here, around two months late, after several delays and setbacks due to the pandemic. The 93rd Academy Awards promises to be ground-breaking for many reasons; several people of colour have earned nominations (seemingly in response to the #OscarsSoWhite movement), female directors Chloé Zhao and Emerald Fennell could make history if they win in any of their categories, while streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime could yet again showcase their dominance over other major film studios.

Chloé Zhao on Sunday became the first woman of color, first Chinese woman and second woman ever to win the Oscar for directing, capping off a historically impressive run of honors she has amassed this awards season for her work on the drama “Nomadland.”
In accepting the award, Zhao recalled a phrase she had learned as a child that she said translated from Mandarin to “people at birth are inherently good.”
“I have always found goodness in the people I met everywhere I went in the world,” she said. “So this is for anyone who has the faith and the courage to hold on to the goodness in themselves. And to hold on to the goodness in each other, no matter how difficult it is to do that. And this is for you, you inspire me to keep going.”
