Opinion: Sexual violence is not a hidden war crime in Ukraine

Working alongside investigators and prosecutors on sexual and gender-based crimes is a horrific experience. To support the work of Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office, Mobile Justice Teams (MJTs) comprised of Ukrainian and international experts were deployed across the country to investigate war crimes and acts of sexual violence. Through these MJTs, we have learned of hundreds of women and men, girls and boys, elders and disabled people across Ukraine who are haunted by sexual crimes committed against them by Russian forces.

Chile reopens inquiry into Nobel laureate Pablo Neruda's 1973 death

A Chilean appeals court on Tuesday ordered the reopening of an investigation into the death of the leftist poet and Nobel laureate Pablo Neruda in 1973 soon after the military seized power in a coup. In a statement, the court said it was heeding a request by Neruda's family and Chile's small Communist Party, adding that the inquiry into his death had not been "exhaustive" and there were still steps to take that would help "clarify the facts." Last year, a panel of international experts delivered a long-awaited report on the death of the author of "20 Poems of Love and a Song of Despair" to the Court of Appeals of Santiago.

After being mired in corruption and political scandals for decades, Ukraine’s critically important Constitutional Court is now facing an attempt at reform, although its success is far from guaranteed. The issue took center stage when the reform of the Constitutional Court became one of the European Union’s key conditions for Ukraine’s membership after the country became a candidate for the bloc in June 2022. According to the law, international experts will take part in the selection of new Constitutional Court judges to make sure that they are independent and comply with integrity standards.

Exclusive-IAEA chief Grossi hints at disagreement among experts on Fukushima report

TOKYO (Reuters) -The head of the U.N.'s nuclear watchdog said on Friday that one or two of the team of international experts behind its report greenlighting Japan's release of treated radioactive water from the crippled Fukushima plant may have had concerns. In his first interview since releasing the report on Tuesday, Grossi said none of the experts had raised concerns with him directly and he did not elaborate on how he had heard of the issue. China's state-run Global Times newspaper on Thursday said Liu Senlin, a Chinese expert in the IAEA's technical working group, was disappointed with the "hasty" report and had said the input from experts was limited and only used for reference.
