here. he has done other attacks before. notably with the same mode of operation where 28 people were killed on a bus. they separated christians and muslims and asked the muslims to recite the koran and killed the christians. when we talk christine, about the mastermind it is good to bear in mind 147 people were murdered in the most basic means possible. these people really are criminals. christine. >> just criminals with unbelievable effect. tell me a little bit about the man -- i guess the man who is saying his son was one of the suspects here. what do we know about that? >> reporter: he is one of the four suspects named by the kenyan interior ministry as one of the main attackers.

operation against the somali based terror group. cnn is there. >> the university has now been opened to the media. we're not allowed into the dormitories where the al shabaab militants came in 5:00 a.m. in the morning and began to kill 147 people. the silence is deceptive. it's extremely difficult to imagine the absolute horror that must have gone on in these grounds a few days ago. we managed to get inside one of the dorm storyitoryiesdormitories. we have though the been allowed to film. there's evidence of attack. bullet holes and grenade holes and a shrapnel across the corridor. this is where they slept. this is destruction and signs of cleanup. tape at the crime scene saying

interview. number two is he said they may send troops in to yemen if they can't solve it otherwise. we are looking at a full-out war in the arabian peninsula and he as much said if it gets bad enough and if we don't trust the administration's deal with iran we are going to get a nuke. we are going to defend ourselves. i really worry about saudi arabia. they are not going into yemen just for the practice. this is a serious, serious war that affects their stability and survival and frankly, we are not doing anything to help them right now. >> your reaction general? >> i disagree with bob a little bit. i did not hear him say they were about to send troops in. in fact i thought he hedged as much on that question -- >> he didn't rule it out. he said they will do whatever is necessary to achieve the objective which is to basically liberate yemen from these houthi rebels. >> he kept coming back to the air campaign repeatedly coming back to the air campaign saying we have forces defensively on the border. truthfully i'm not sure the saudi arabian army is capable of conducting an operation into

students and security officials. what are you learning this morning? >> reporter: christine, as you said the interior minister of kenya are calling the mastermind behind the attack mahmoud. he is now in control of the militias that come across the border into kenya to create havoc. one of the previous attacks he associated with have the same mode of operation against the university. the attack on the bus on the road down here where they stopped the bus and got all passengers off and separated them christians and muslims, and began to kill the christians. 28 people died. this man, christine, is a extremely dangerous man. they use the term mastermind. this man is just using the basic means possible to kill as many people as possible. christine. >> tell us a little bit about --

in june, that's 30 days. then you have the intense heat of the summertime. mark and i were speaking about this earlier having been to mosul in the summer. you are talking about 130 degrees. that makes it very difficult. in addition to that when i was in iraq in december meeting with american commanders there, they were talking about the preparation of iraqi forces raising a lot of questions saying not just months but it could be a year before they are ready to carry out an operation of this intensity, and difficulty. listen all this can change. but at the earliest in the fall is the best assessment i'm getting right now from the pentagon. >> what we are seeing now, these mass graves that have been unearthed in tikrit tikrit has been liberated from isis it was a joint operation, the iraqi military backed by shiite militias backed by iran with some u.s. air power in the process, tikrit is -- but there are literally hundreds if not thousands of iraqi soldiers and other shiites who have been massacred there. these graves are awful. arwa damon was on the scene. it's a brutal picture. >> some of the film that arwa

threat here to the u.s. homeland? obviously, anybody can be a lone wolf and say they pledge allegiance to al shabab or al qaeda and do something terrible. is al-shabaab the thinking that they really could send resources here and make some sort of catastrophic hit? >> it's probably not the highest threat to the homeland in that respect. however, there's two things that would worry me. one is can they inspire someone back here in the states to do an attack? and we've seen they've made those attempts in the past. they've tried to inspire followers of al-shabaab in the united states to do something in the united states. that's always a concern. to mount an operation that would actually get to the united states would be pretty difficult for al-shabaab. you get their logistics, training and access to a movement to an organization

of a hawk as the republicans are that are running. >> and let's move over to hillary clinton, adding on to her team and the speculation of when she can announce. and we know our former colleague here has been hired and so it seems we are waiting for the announcement. >> and we have no confirmation. but the smart money is that it will happen this month. and one of the reasons we're seeing so presidential announcements in april, the full-fledged i'm running or the committee paperwork, is people want to raise the money. if you are a hillary clinton or a marco rubio, you want to raise upwards of a billion dollars and to do that you need to get the paperwork started early and raising the money. but it is no surprise if people are following politics, hillary clinton is running and people are working on a volunteer basis but that operation is coming in

>> reporter: it is chaotic. 12 nights into this operation and this family is mourning the loss of their father. the situation on the ground is described as dire. in the port city of aden the strategic city down south, there are areas where there is no water and no power. one witness this morning, in the past hour or so describing the city as a ghost town. no one to be seen. the scale of destruction, he said clearer by the day. aid agencies have been struggling to get aid into the area. red cross is flying in today with staff and supplies. clearly, as things get worse on the ground in the country which is verging on a failed state if not one already, this cannot come quickly enough.

they should have taken those warnings in effect. and that there are limitations now on america's ability to evacuate them. one of them being that the airport is closed. so really the only advice the state department giving the americans that are there is to shelter in place and in light of the scenes we are seeing there, the fighting et cetera you can see why that makes sense. >> what are you hearing about the alleged cooperation apparently going on right now between al qaeda in the arabian peninsula, aqap, and al shabab? that's the terror group based in somalia that killed nearly 150 people mostly christians at that kenyan university? >> well this would be a worrisome collaboration. i spoke to a u.s. counter terrorism official today. they said like these al qaeda affiliates do these groups are communicating. aqap and al shabab they may be sharing know-how. there is no evidence they collaborated on a joint operation but i'm told that is a credible next step something they are watching for, but they haven't seen it yet. >> is the saudi air campaign making a positive difference or
