LONDON (AP) — Britain’s health chief said Wednesday that a new study suggesting that a single dose of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine provides a high level of protection for 12 weeks supports the government’s strategy of delaying the second shot so it can protect more people quickly with a first dose.

UK Warns New Virus Strain May Be Deadlier Too

After reporting that a new coronavirus variant found in the United Kingdom spreads more easily, now British authorities say the new strain is also more deadly.

(CN) — With the world recording its deadliest week yet in the pandemic, the United Kingdom on Friday added to the global misery by announcing that a new strain of the coronavirus appears to not just be more contagious, but also more deadly.
Shortly before Christmas, the U.K. startled the world by reporting that a new strain it had identified in southeastern England was more contagious and therefore spreading at alarming rates. Since then, the U.K. has seen a staggering increase in infections and deaths and travel to and from the British Isles has been greatly restricted.

Should State Pay Businesses Shuttered by Covid Orders? New Mexico Justices to Decide

(AP Photo/Matt Dunham)
SANTA FE, N.M. (CN) — The New Mexico Supreme Court heard arguments Wednesday on whether businesses which lost income due to Covid-19 shutdowns can seek compensation from the state under rules governing regulatory takings.
The high court took up a petition for writ of superintending control and emergency request for stay brought by the state involving plaintiffs in 20 lawsuits brought across the state. The plaintiffs claim business closures and restrictions brought under public health emergency orders constituted regulatory takings and thus the businesses are entitled to compensation under New Mexico’s Public Health Emergency Response Act.

(CN) — With the death toll from the pandemic nearing 2 million, Europe and the Americas are setting new grim records as ever more people fall ill and die from the novel coronavirus.
On Friday, London declared a state of emergency with Mayor Sadiq Khan warning that the capital’s hospitals faced being unable to cope with the wave of sick people. London and other parts of southeastern England are under siege from a mutated version of the virus that is up to 70% more contagious.

Uncertainty Lingers Around Long-Term Immunity From Covid-19 Vaccines

In a departure from traditional vaccine design, the leading Covid-19 shots trigger an immune response by leveraging the body’s own cellular mechanics to produce viral proteins.

(CN) — Pharmaceutical companies are holding out hope that the mRNA technology used to develop breakthrough Covid-19 vaccines is flexible enough to provide for seasonal shots in case immunity gained from initial vaccination is short-lived.
The first Covid-19 vaccine approved for use in the U.S., Pfizer and BioNTech’s shot was purportedly 95% effective in preventing symptomatic coronavirus infections in a large study group. Positive study results have also been released for Moderna’s vaccine, which secured an emergency use authorization by the Food and Drug Administration on Dec. 18.

New Strain of Coronavirus Sets Off Alarm in Europe

The threat caused by the coronavirus variant remains unclear as scientists are divided over whether it is more transmissible.

(CN) — A potentially dangerous mutation of the novel coronavirus found to be spreading rapidly in the United Kingdom is causing alarm across the world and prompting countries to close off travel with Britain.
On Saturday, the U.K. imposed strict lockdown measures to stop the spread of a new variant of the virus that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said is much more transmissible, though he said there was no evidence it was more lethal or more resistant to vaccines. In many parts of Britain, Christmas and New Year celebrations are being severely curtailed due to the threat posed by the new strain.

Church Asks Court to Prevent Shutdown of Services From California Covid Restrictions

(Peter Byrne/PA Wire)
(CN) — The Calvary Chapel Church in San Jose urged a federal judge Thursday afternoon to block California and Santa Clara County’s Covid-19 restrictions so that its congregants can continue gathering to worship.
U.S. District Judge Beth Labson Freeman indicated in a hearing held via Zoom that she was unlikely to grant the request, although she acknowledged the tension between the right to worship and public health orders warranted such a hearing.
“I am inclined to deny the scope of the requested relief,” Labson Freeman said at the beginning of the hearing as she asked the plaintiffs to persuade her otherwise.
