International Women's Day: Book celebrates the female scientists changing the world

MIDDLESBROUGH Soroptimists are part of a worldwide network of women whose mission is to improve the lives of women, both locally and overseas. Like most organisations they had to change and adapt during lockdown so they decided their project would be to produce a book celebrating the achievements of women scientists past and present.
It is called, Overcoming the Odds, and women scientists were chosen, because science is playing a major role in managing and fighting the pandemic.
“We wanted the book to be an inspiration to girls and young women to perhaps consider a career in a science-related field,” said Pam Cooper, president of SI Middlesbrough, and co-author of the book. “Many of the women featured had to overcome discrimination, illness or disability and so the title 'Overcoming the Odds' was chosen. Several Middlesbrough Soroptimists contributed and each added a personal note as to why, during the pandemic, they had made their particular choice.”

FREE VACCINE LATE AGAIN! Bahamas gets another delay for the COVID-19 vaccine

NASSAU| After much anticipation, Bahamians – although some are somewhat wary of taking it – expected to hear the announcement today that the COVID-19 vaccine had finally arrived in country. Instead, a national address by Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis revealed a further delay. What will be the first shipment of Oxford’s Astra Zenica COVID-19 vaccine is now expected to get here on Wednesday, March 10th.
Donated to The Bahamas by the government of India, this tranche of 20,000 doses is a bonus to the promised 100,000 doses from the COVAX facility that Health Minister Renward Wells said has already been paid for and was expected first by the middle of last month, and then again by the last week of last month. Reportedly, the first batch of those doses from COVAX will reach The Bahamas by the end of this month, while the remaining doses are expected by the end of May.

'Importing vaccines from India exposes country's failing health institutions'Nigeria — The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

At last, the much-awaited COVID-19 vaccines are now in the country and President Muhammadu Buhari and other top leaders are expected to be vaccinated publicly on Saturday.
But there are still questions regarding the state of the health sector. For instance, on the lips of most Nigerians are: What would Nigeria have done without the free donation of vaccines by the COVAX facility? Nigeria took delivery of COVID-19 vaccines made in India. What does that say of Nigeria’s health sector and capacity to play in global health platforms? If India, which used to be at the same level as Nigeria could put its act together to produce vaccines in a few months, why not Nigeria?

LAHORE: Pakistan, Nigeria and Indonesia will be among the biggest recipients of free coronavirus vaccines before June — more than 10 million doses each — the Covax scheme announced on Tuesday.
Some 238.2 million doses will be distributed around the world by the end of May, in a major acceleration of the program aimed at boosting access to coronavirus jabs in poorer nations.
Though vaccination campaigns have gathered pace globally, the majority of injections have been administered in wealthier countries while many nations have yet to receive a single dose.
