americans are so pessimistic about this economy when so many of the numbers that we used to judge what is going on with americans in their households, and with the economy at large. unemployment, jobs, wages, inflation. they're all getting better but people are still feeling sour, why is that in your view? >> okay, so the first thing to say is there is a big difference between what people say about how their own lives are going, and what they say about the economy. a large majority of americans are saying that they are doing fine, a i'm doing, good i'm doing great, or at least okay. but a majority also say that the economy is doing badly. so there is a real strong sense in which people are saying, i'm okay, but something bad is happening to somebody else not me. then once you start to look under the hood of that the biggest single factor is partisanship. it's just, if you look at polls

the top democrats they're becoming increasingly optimistic about the economy and their own lives. republicans are not that different from democrats in their assessment of how they're doing. but they are extremely negative about the economy. look at america in 2024. if you are a republican, whatever question upholstery may ask, the question you end up answering is, do i support donald trump? and so we have this extremely negative -- it's not the only factor but it's a really large part of it that is simply -- what you say about the economy becomes a statement about your political identity. >> yes there are so many shortcuts about the economy that just reflect partisanship, peoples views at large about the democratic party, the republican party. you've written a lot about that pessimism from republicans. i wonder about hispanic and black voters. these are core democratic

motivated our president, both in his first state of the union, to call on congress to legislatively address this and give him the powers he needs, and in the supplemental package he asked for months ago, to ask for billions of dollars to strengthen border security. many of us in the democratic party want to make sure we aren't helping fund traffickers, that we aren't creating a humanitarian disaster in our hemisphere and at the southern border. we disagree, between republicans and democrats, about what policies will most likely achieve the outcome, but there is a broad awareness that the huge number of folks that are transiting central america and coming through mexico to our southern border is just not sustainable. you're right, the voices of democratic mayors adding to the concerns of many of us in congress are focusing us on a moment where, if republicans and democrats can put down the tools of partisanship and recognize we have an opportunity here to make responsible changes, that that should happen. >> all right. democratic senator chris coons of delaware, thank you.

will the conservative justices making up the 6 to 3 majority, often citing originalism, or reading the constitution in line with what the framers originally intended as their guiding doctrine. will they drop originalism on this one case to help trump? a lot of conservative legal scholars have commentated, including judge michael luttig. they new york times david french, and also the two authors of the university of penn law debates, saying that section three is self executing of a criminal conviction. they all say that this is an open and shut case. of course, the supreme court is not guided only by the constitution, it is great guided by politics and partisanship. don't take my word for it, take the word of donald trump's own lawyer on fox this week. >> it should be a supreme court slammed, i have faith in them. people like kavanaugh, who the president fought for, who the president went through hell to get into place. she will step up.
