The EU electricity market has damaged France's energy system, according to the conclusions of a special enquiry committee set up by the French parliament.
The USA's Department of Energy, the UK's Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd, the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission and the French National Radioactive Waste Management Agency have pledged to develop "their long-standing collaboration on the successful decommissioning and remediation of legacy nuclear sites".
French radioactive waste management agency Andra has applied for a construction licence for the planned Centre Industriel de Stockage Géologique (Cigéo) deep geological disposal facility for high-level radioactive waste.
Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, Belgium and the Netherlands are also examining the construction of long-term high-level radioactive waste storage sites. Andra, the nuclear waste treatment agency, said this latest application for the storage site did not include the six new EPR nuclear reactors currently under consideration for construction by French power giant EDF, citing the lack of a final decision to embark on the new build.
PARIS (Reuters) - France's national agency for managing nuclear waste has applied to the ministry of ecological transition for the creation of a project for the long-term storage of high-level radioactive waste, the agency said on Tuesday.
