COLUMBUS — Ohio is at the head of the pack when it comes to getting the COVID-19 vaccine into long-term care facilities.
According to state data updated Sunday, Ohio has administered the fifth-highest number of doses nationally through the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's Pharmacy Partnership for Long-Term Care Program.
Peter Van Runkle, executive director for the Ohio Health Care Association, said the federal initiative is wrapping up, but there's still a need.
"There are new people who come into facilities all the time," Van Runkle said. "There are new admissions, there are new staff members that are hired, and we need to have a mechanism for those folks to get vaccinated."

Oak Cottage of Santa Barbara Celebrates as Staff, Residents Get First Doses of COVID-19 Vaccine

Housing and Development Newsletter
“The local public health department does not have oversight of this process,” county disaster preparedness manager Jan Koegler told Noozhawk via email. “As a supplement to this process, county public health has offered to vaccinate ASL (assisted-living facilities) workers and residents who can come to the vaccination PODs (points of distribution).”
At least 190 facilities in Santa Barbara County are enrolled in the federal pharmacy partnership program, Koegler said Friday.
“We are working with the facilities to obtain data on when they are scheduled to receive their first doses through the partnership,” Koegler said. “From the data we have collected so far, we calculate that 3,453 residents and staff have received at least a first dose. This number does not take into account how many have been vaccinated through a PHD (public health department), vaccine clinic or by another health care provider.”

Elderly residents of long-term care facilities received vaccine doses this week after health care workers took top priority.
Oregon-based Consonus Pharmacy dispensed the new COVID-19 vaccine to a Portland-area senior living facility Monday, Dec. 21.
Consonus Pharmacy is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Pharmacy Partnership for Long-Term Care Program. The partnership program offers on-site vaccinations to nursing home and assisted living facility residents.
Staff and residents at long-term care facilities were slated to be second in line to receive the first allotments of the new Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, following the inoculation of frontline health care workers.
Elderly residents at care facilities are part of a high-risk population for contracting and dying from the COVID-19 virus.
