Beyond CBD, THC: 'Minor' Cannabinoids Flood Market

email article
On the heels of the cannabidiol (CBD) craze come three other cannabinoids touted as potential treatments for various medical issues: cannabigerol (CBG), cannabinol (CBN), and delta-8 THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). While companies are freely selling products featuring these compounds, especially delta-8, practitioners and industry insiders note little evidence exists regarding any of the three.
They especially question delta-8, which has captivated the market over the last year despite a dearth of research.
"Given the nature of these compounds (on their own), it's unlikely that they're unsafe," Jordan Tishler, MD, president of the Association of Cannabis Specialists, wrote in an email to

Young Hidradenitis Suppurativa Patients See Lags in Care

There's some room for improvement in diagnosing pediatric hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), researchers suggested.
In an international cross-sectional analysis of 481 patients diagnosed with HS, the average age of diagnosis came about 2 years after the average age of disease onset (14.4 and 12.5 years, respectively), according to Irene Lara-Corrales, MD, of the University of Toronto, and colleagues.
Among adolescents, the inflammatory skin condition most often presented with a cyst or abscess, accounting for about half of the first signs and symptoms, they stated in
The second and third most common initial symptoms of the debilitating disorder were pain and tenderness (25%), followed by papules and pustules (24%).

PTSD Post-COVID; Caplyta Seeking New Indications

Intra-Cellular Therapies is formally seeking two new indications for its bipolar medication lumateperone (Caplyta) -- as monotherapy and as adjunctive therapy to lithium or valproate for depressive episodes of adult bipolar I or II disorder.

Alzheimer's May Start Sooner for People With Anxiety, Depression History

email article
A history of either anxiety or depression was inversely associated with the age when Alzheimer's disease started, a retrospective analysis suggested.
People with Alzheimer's disease who had a past diagnosis of anxiety were 3 years younger than other Alzheimer's patients when they developed the disease, reported Zachary Miller, MD, of the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), and co-authors.
Patients with a history of depression were 2 years younger at Alzheimer's onset, they said in an abstract released in advance of the 2021 American Academy of Neurology annual meeting.
The findings were based on 1,500 Alzheimer's disease patients from the UCSF Memory and Aging Center who were screened for past psychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Researchers evaluated typical Alzheimer's risk factors -- hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, education, and

What Goes Missing in the Rush to Virtual Care?

email article
Healthcare providers have aggressively climbed onto the virtual care bandwagon since last March, conducting half or more of their patient visits by phone or computer. From mid-March to mid-October, nearly 40% of Medicare beneficiaries received a covered telemedicine service.
Now, with barely a year's worth of experience and few studies to rate outcomes, researchers are asking if virtual care standards -- whatever they are -- and patient access to telehealth platforms are good enough. The question will be particularly relevant if payers continue reimbursing at in-person visit rates after the pandemic subsides, as the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) said it was considering in August.

Teens Commonly Misuse Their Prescribed Psych Meds

More than one-fifth of American youth reported misuse of their psychoactive prescription, a new study found.
In a survey of kids ages 12-17 prescribed opioids, stimulants, tranquilizers, or sedatives, 20.9% -- equating to about 1.3 million youth -- said they used their medication in a way that wasn't prescribed or directed for them within the previous year, reported Israel Agaku, PhD, of Harvard School of Dental Medicine in Boston, and colleagues.
Of these youth, 3.4% were further classified as having substance use disorder, defined as abuse or dependence on the psychoactive prescription medication within the past year, the researchers wrote online in
Among kids prescribed two or more psychoactive prescription medications at the same time, nearly half reported misusing said medication.

Yes, Your Doctor Was a 'Sorority Girl'

email article
Patients often commented on my attire other than my white coat, particularly my impractical footwear, until I finally broke down and purchased Danskos to avoid being called out for my truthful impracticality. It is amazing how patients care more about my orthotics than the reason they scheduled a visit with me -- and God bless them for that.
I am in family medicine, and I thrive on personal and genuine relationships where patients feel comfortable to call me out on my high heels because they want their doctor's back and feet to be OK. In this day, with how overbooked and exhausted both patients and physicians seem to have become, I have found it refreshing that my patients continue to ask how I am doing in this pandemic.

Watch for Suicidality in People With Autism

People with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) carry a higher risk for suicide, a Danish study found.
A nationwide cohort study of over 35,000 individuals with autism found a more than three-fold higher rate of both suicide attempt (adjusted incidence rate ratio [aIRR] 3.19, 95% CI 2.93-3.46) and suicide (aIRR 3.75, 95% CI 2.85-4.92) compared with people without autism, reported Kairi Kõlves, PhD, of Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia, and colleagues in
Although higher rates of suicide attempt were noted across all age groups, women with autism appeared to be disproportionately affected, with a more than four-fold higher rate of suicide attempt compared with men (aIRR 4.41, 95% CI 3.74-5.19).
