SFWA Announces the 2021 Kate Wilhelm Solstice Award Recipients

The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America is closing the first month of 2021 by announcing the recipients of the Kate Wilhelm Solstice Award. This honor is given out to those who have made “distinguished contributions to the science fiction and fantasy community.”
There are three recipients this year:
Ben Bova
Jarvis Sheffield
Before he passed away in 2020, Ben Bova had a long history working as a writer, journalist, and editor. A few of Bova’s most notable achievements include serving as editor for both
Analog Science Fiction/Science Fact and
Omni Magazine, as well as becoming President Emeritus of the National Space Society. Along the way, he wrote over one hundred books and received a number of Hugo Awards. Bova’s posthumous Kate Wilhlem Solstice Award will honor his many editorial contributions and constant work to improve the science fiction genre.

Five Books by Authors We Lost in 2020

(1976)
A relic of short-lived American-Soviet cooperation, the American moon base and Soviet Lunagrad are forced to coexist by their intertwined design. Awkward, given that the latest twist in the Cold War, a race to complete duelling orbital antiballistic missile networks, is supplied and managed from the conjoined moon colonies.
Given escalating resource shortages, many expect that whichever power completes their network first will make a bid for planetary domination. Even given functioning ABM networks, the results will no doubt be catastrophic.
Chet Kinsman, commander of the American moon base, does not care to see how World War Three might play out. Neither, as it happens, does his opposite number in Lunagrad. Unlike the majority of humans, the two commanders are uniquely placed to alter history: between them, the Soviets and Americans have enough lasers in orbit for a full AMB network. All the two officers need do is hijack the military resources with which their respective governments have entrusted them—and survive the consequences.

Footnotes, Ephemera, and Other Stories From the Margins

It’s an uncertain night in early November after the American election, and I find myself checking for footnotes. Yes, footnotes. I reach for footnotes, marginalia when things are uncertain. It’s a habitual hold over from my days in grad school. I used to think footnotes were there to provide clarity. Further citation, a reference to a clarifying source, see
here for authority, credibility.
Credibility sounds awfully appealing right now.
We learned about the truth this year, just as I learned with footnotes years ago, it all depends on your sources. You can state anything in the primary text if you cite a persuasive source or personality to back it up. Or even better, cite nothing at all! Just do it with authoritative style.
