there after the storm tore into dominica with a full veracity. it was a cat 5 hurricane when it hit. michael holmes takes us on a journey to survey the jaw-dropping devastation. >> reporter: hurricane maria hit dominica at full category 5 strength and showed no mercy plowing through villages and the towns and the capital. not a tree untouched across the islands. thousands snapped in two. no greenery left. there was spectacular rain forests here, no more. this is as close as we or anyone can get to dominica for now. the airport is shut down. hoping to open it in the hours ahead to see how bad things are down there. we can see from up here, this island has been hit and hit hard. we pass. our pilot unable to land before on the ground safety checks had deemed the runway safety safe.

shear luck. one aviation expert predicts the problem will get worse. he stopped by earlier today. >> the problem is we don't have accountability of the faa to fix it and until we get accountability and also get the airlines to start demanding it, we're going to have incidents like you saw in the "new york times." >> shep: federal aviation officials say they have taken steps to improve runway safety. they say more changes are coming, but that could be years away. here is a news flash, the government reports that we can expect more fees when we fly as mergers leave flyers with fewer travel option. gee, really consolidation? makes it more expensive? in the past decade, bankruptcies and mergers have cut the number of major airlines in half and now there are just five of them. if u.s. airways and american merge, which looks likely, it would leave four. according it a report from the department of transportation, less competition has led airlines to cut flights to many smaller cities and it warns airlines will add even more fees
clipped the tail of a much smaller yet literally lifting it off the ground and realigning it on the tarmac by about 45 degrees. the faa must continue to address this safety issue. we've also requested the department of transportation inspector general to examine runway safety issues and report back to congress. mica as this also reflects a failure of congress to pass a long-term extension of the faa reauthorization. they've had something like 27 extensions over the past several years. a long-term extension would include funding for next generation air traffic control which would allow air traffic controllers to keep track of airplanes no matter where they are at all times. also a statement today in which it is said this may be a reflection of reporting. they cite specifically the air traffic safety action program which allows air traffic controllers to report incidents without fear of retribution.
