faa's virginia regional radar facility allowed the first lady's plane to get too close to air force c-17 cargo plane in front of it. now the faa requires a separation of five miles between planes at that lore altitude because of the turbulence over the wings, the wing tip vortices. civilian controller told the military controller at andrews that the distance between the two was four miles but that was inaccurate. in fact, the distance was just over three miles. the andrews controller instructed the 737 to make a series of "s" turns to increase the distance but that was ineffective. military controllers were unsure if there was enough time for the c-17 to get off the runway once it landed for the first lady's plane to land on the same runway so they instructed the first lady plane to abort the landing. this, of course, comes after a series of embarrassing incidents. five cases of controllers sleeping on the job. another case of a controller
