Young activists include justice in their fight against climate change

The longer Sahara Valentine fights the climate crisis, the bigger that fight becomes.
The struggle for a more livable future has become more urgent since she joined the cause at 10 years old. For her, it has become a fight for the future of the world's most vulnerable people. A sense only her generation is willing to fight has become more real.
"Climate change is really the biggest threat facing the youth right now," Valentine said.
Valentine, 16, is one of the youngest plaintiffs in
Juliana v. United States, a 2015 lawsuit
brought by 21 young people,
six of whom are from Eugene, which alleged the federal government infringed on their rights to a healthy future by allowing the use of fossil fuels.

Rollout speedbumps
While the county is commended for its vaccine rollout efforts, a number of problems with the system are apparent.
First, the rate people are being vaccinated is controlled by the availability of vaccines. As a result, The R-G cautions that everyone should be patient. One goal of the program is to prioritize the most vulnerable — those over 70. Scheduling appointments for vaccination has proved daunting for seniors, particularly for those of advanced age who do not have internet access.
Vaccinations for younger age groups are being advanced, while many in the older age groups are still waiting. Further, the providers other than LCPH arrange appointments separately from LCPH, but the identity of these providers is not publicized.

– Youth Climate Case Headed for U.S. Supreme Court

Youth Climate Case Headed for U.S. Supreme Court

EUGENE, Oregon, February 10, 2021 (ENS) – The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, without explanation, today denied the request of 21 young people to have a full panel of the court hear their climate case against the U.S. Government. “We will now seek review in the U.S. Supreme Court,” declared the plaintiffs’ Eugene-based law firm Our Children’s Trust, because the court did not correct the “significant legal errors made in the January 2020 ruling.”
In this much-watched lawsuit, Juliana v. United States, a three-judge panel of the Ninth Circuit declined to consider the case in January 2020, ruling in a split decision, that the issue should not be decided in any federal court at all, but by the legislative and executive branches of government.
