HSE's approach to cervical smear case 'disgraceful' – solicitor

A retired nurse who died hours before mediation started in her legal challenge against the Health Service Executive over her cervical smear tests could have had her case settled while she was still alive, her solicitor has said.
Joan Lucey (73), of Cooleen, Dingle, Co Kerry, died on Friday night, according to Fr Michael Moynihan, parish priest at St Mary’s Church in Dingle.
The widow’s action against the HSE was due to be heard before the High Court next week, but her lawyers sought mediation instead, saying she was “on her deathbed” and they were concerned large parts of her claim might die with her.

Weddings usually reflect the couples getting married, but the coronavirus pandemic shifted the scope on a lot of planned ceremonies and receptions. Some were cancelled or postponed for future dates, and some went on in other fashions. Here are some Capital Region wedding stories from this past year.

What was originally supposed to be a 190+ person event was paired down to just a (lucky) thirteen immediate family members and our two dogs. On June 6, 2020, everything in the world was still so uncertain other than the fact that for the past two years we knew this was going to be the day we finally tied the knot. Family got ordained, became our glam squad, stood in as flower women (our moms) / ring bearers (our brothers) and showed us that true love really does conquer all.

GOP candidates emerging in Schenectady City Council race

In Schenectady, GOP has one candidate for City Council, hopes for more
FacebookTwitterEmail
Republican candidate Kevin Hammer has formally launched a bid for City Council.
The political newcomer was endorsed by the county Republican committee last week.
"I looked around where we are living and saw every reason to get involved,” said Hammer, who lives downtown with his husband.
Hammer, who relocated from Scotia in 2012, is the first in what party officials expect to be a growing field of GOP candidates in coming days, said county Republican committee Chairman Chris Koetzle.
“It looks like our slate is growing in Schenectady, and we will have more candidates to announce shortly,” Koetzle said, citing three additional hopefuls who are weighing bids.

GLENVILLE  -  Chris Koetzle rattles off a long list of achievements when discussing his tenure as supervisor and why he deserves four more years in office.
For that to happen, he’ll have to beat back a challenge from Town Board member Mike Aragosa, a Democrat at the top of a ticket that features incumbent Michael Godlewski and Jenny Lippmann, who is seeking elected office for the first time.

GLENVILLE - With Republican Town Supervisor Chris Koetzle set to vie for a fourth term, Democrat Town Board member Mike Aragosa says the community doesn't need a "career politician" who he portrayed as adversarial and a micromanager.
On Tuesday, Aragosa kicked off his political campaign to unseat Koetzle this year, in a pivotal race in a key battleground municipality that will determine the balance of power on a 5-member governing body where Republicans currently hold a 3-2 majority.
The 57-year-od Aragosa, who is running with incumbent Town Board member Michael Godlewski and Jenny Lippman, a political newcomer, said he is running to give people a choice.

Scores of New York National Guard Honor Guard soldiers and airmen had far less military funerals to perform last year and the elite soldiers and airmen had to adjust the way they performed their duties.
Pandemic restrictions on funeral services have resulted in New York Army and Air National Guard Honor Guard teams providing more than 2,000 fewer military funeral services in 2020 than in 2019, according to Eric Durr, state Division of Military and Naval Affairs spokesman.
