The Life Of The Mind by Christine Smallwood, more books we're reading in April

Despite what publicists and jacket-copy writers might have you believe, there are way more readers out there who appreciate, and even prefer, novels in which not a whole lot happens. “Page-turner” needn’t only apply to the action-filled or plot-driven. That’s not to say that things don’t happen in Christine Smallwood’s
The Life Of The Mind (March 2, Hogarth), which centers on English adjunct Dorothy in the days and weeks following her miscarriage due to a blighted ovum. (The writer structured her novel around the prolonged, intermittent bleeding of her main character, who views her body with a matter-of-fact curiosity.) Dorothy grades papers, rides the subway, attends a literary conference. Scenes set around a karaoke party and an underwater puppet show (!) are given the kind of symbolic weight one might more likely see in short fiction. As with so many exemplary novels in which plot is not the driving force, the main attraction of

A war-ravaged kingdom on the brink of falling apart is the setting for Netflix's upcoming series, Shadow And Bone. Adapted from a series of books that have been dubbed as "The Grishaverse" written by Leigh Bardugo, the series centres around a young woman named Alina Starkov, who discovers she has powers, making her part of an elite group of people known as the Grisha.
However, her powers are rare and could be the solution to tearing down "The Fold", a shadowy place that runs through the middle of the kingdom filled with monsters. Because of this, she gains the attention of General Kirigan, leader of the Grishas who finds himself enamoured with the young Alina, but Kirigan isn't all that he seems.

April 1, 2021
Spring is upon us (took long enough)! And with it, the arrival of several new things, like new wardrobes (break out the light jackets), new recipes (refreshing cocktails for the win), and, of course, new Netflix material.
Several new releases are making their way to the streaming service this April. One of the most anticipated releases of the line-up is “Shadow and Bone,” the Netflix adaptation of the first book from the Grishaverse, part of Leigh Bardugo’s popular book series. But that won’t be out till near the end of the month, along with “Yasuke,” an anime series telling the story of the titular African samurai who served in Japan in the late 16th century. The series is being created by LeSean Thomas (of “The Boondocks” and “The Legend of Korra” fame) and will star Lakeith Stanfield. Other new releases include Idris Elba’s

Netflix's Shadow And Bone Combines Books, Creates New Tales, and Goes Big With Story (Set Visit Report)
In adapting
Shadow and Bone into a series for Netflix, showrunner Eric Heisserer had a lot of important choices to make. He had to get creative with some original story ideas of his own which were not laid out fully in Leigh Bardugo's novels but he also had to make key choices in regards to production. For example, should he runn the show for 10 episodes or 8 episodes in its freshman season? He chose eight, knowing the series would have the same amount of funding either way, and decided to add production value to his story. The decision seems to have been the right one. Upon stepping into the Budapest set of

Netflix's Shadow And Bone: 7 Quick Things We Know About The YA Fantasy Series

CinemaBlend
A little less than nine years after the publication of
Shadow and Bone, the first novel in Leigh Bardugo’s fantasy-adventure Grisha trilogy, the spellbinding literary franchise is finally getting an adaptation on Netflix in spring 2021. There have been attempts in the past to bring Bardugo’s celebrated novel to life, including a planned film adaptation from a
Harry Potter producer that never materialized, but at long last
Shadow and Bone is coming to Netflix. And best of all, there is a lot we already know about the YA fantasy series.
As show creator Eric Heisserer (whose screenwriting credits include

Shadow and Bone, alongside promotional images for its TV series adaptation of Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse.
For fans of the book series, which includes the main trilogy, two additional duologies, and two short story collections, the April 23 release date feels like a windfall. Because Netflix is notoriously tightlipped about their upcoming shows and movies, fans have been left to speculate and pine for each additional detail. And though we were treated to a chilling and enticing teaser trailer in December, the titles of the episodes, and an exquisite casting image of our leads—there’s still so much that’s unclear. And if you haven’t gotten a chance to read the books—

The first photos of
Shadow and Bone, Netflix’s adaptation of Leigh Bardugo’s best-selling Grishaverse books, reveal the main cast in action — as well as a glimpse of the fantasy world.
“Think Imperial Russia, not Medieval England, repeating rifles instead of broadswords,” said Bardugo, who also serves as executive producer.
The first set of books centers on Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), an orphaned mapmaker unaware of her own great power. The land of Ravka is torn in half by the Shadow Fold, a supernatural barrier of tangible darkness, which is slowly destroying the country’s economy and society. Alina, along with her best friend Mal (Archie Renaux), are members of a dispensable army that the Ravkan government sends through the Fold.
