Loujain al-Hathloul has been released from prison after over 1,000 days in detention.
Loujain al-Hathloul, one of Saudi Arabia's most prominent women's rights campaigners, has been released after more than 1,000 days in prison for what critics have described as politically-motivated charges.
Hathloul, 31, was arrested in a May 2018 sweep that targeted well-known opponents of the kingdom's since-rescinded law barring women from driving. She told her family she had been tortured and sexually abused in prison -- allegations Riyadh repeatedly denied -- and her detention was condemned by the United Nations and global human rights groups.

The apparent end to the Saudi-led blockade of Qatar and a reconciliation among the states involved prompts the question: when will the Saudi government release the citizens who were caught up in the conflict and imprisoned during the three and a half-year crisis?
In a breakthrough, it was announced on 4 January that Saudi Arabia had opened its land border with Qatar, paving the way for an easing of tensions that had led to Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE and Bahrain severing diplomatic and trade ties with Qatar in mid-2017. On 5 January, the annual GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) summit took place in Saudi Arabia’s north-western Al-Ula province. And for the first time since the blockade on Qatar was imposed, the Qatari emir attended.

On Monday, December 28, 2020, our sister, Loujain al-Hathloul, was sentenced to five years and eight months in prison. Loujain’s sentence came after spending nearly three years in pre-trial detention, during which she was brutally tortured, placed in solitary confinement, went on two hunger strikes, and was denied contact with our parents (her legal representatives) numerous times.

Canada calls sentence of Saudi activist Lojain al-Hathloul 'deeply troubling'

Last Updated: Thursday, December 31, 2020 13:11
Global Affairs Canada is calling a sentence delivered to human rights activist Loujain al-Hathloul by a court in Saudi Arabia on Monday “deeply troubling.”
The five years and eight months sentence includes a two-year and 10-month suspension–in addition to time she has already served–opening the way for her to be released in March.
“We understand that early release is possible and advocate for it,” Global Affairs Canada said in a statement.
“True to our democratic values and principles, Canada will always stand with human-rights activists and defenders around the world.”
State-linked media announced the sentence, saying al-Hathloul, who gained international prominence in 2013 when she led a fight to allow women in Saudi Arabia to drive, was found guilty of a number charges.
