concerned about that i've not really considered but after hearing your concern or reading about it, i'm now concerned about it too. it's not so much about the spread of the virus and the variants that exist. it's that when you bring thousands of people together from hundreds of countries, more than 200 countries represented, there could be now the birth of new variants. explain that. what would happen here? >> that's a very real risk. we have seen it with the other variants. they are smart. when they get together, they can reproduce and mutate. they select from each other that confer the advantage. they all shared the same mutations that would make them more transmissable. now we have delta and india says we have delta plus. every likelihood that variants

again this fall, unfortunately. the virus loves the dry, cold weather. we're already seeing surges across the country, especially in areas of low vaccination rates. the delta variant is more transmissable. i don't think we'll necessarily see a lockdown, but i do think we need to maybe tie mask mandates to hospitalizations, cases or vaccination rates in areas. i think we'll see probably more of what's happening in l.a. county across the country this fall. >> all right. we'll leave it there. thank you, peter hotez and dr. uche blackstock. still ahead, a bombshell packed new book on the disastrous final year of the trump administration. stay with us. ump administration stay with us liberty mutual customizes car insurance so you only pay for what you need. how much money can liberty mutual save you? one! two! three! four! five! 72,807! 72,808... dollars.

some point close to somebody else, there was able to be two transmissions of the virus as a result of that. something that we would sort of not really pay attention to, think wouldn't be a problem, there was just a brief sort of walk-by almost that actually resulted in a viral transmission. the point of that contact tracing study and that case report is that the delta variant is far more transmissable, we knew that. now it seems like it's maybe three to four times more transmissable than that original variant and within your body you could be carrying a thousand times the viral load if you have the delta variant and are unvaccinated. a thousand times the viral load compared to what wae were seein at this point last summer. if you have a thousand times you're much more to be contagious and a source of spread. >> and the idea that you can just walk by somebody and just

delta vary yants which is far more transmissable? >> that's a great question. we have done a great job really encouraging our community staff and students with the vaccination. we hosted multiple vaccination events. we hosted nine events at local schools, at community hubs. we vaccinated over 3500 people. about 67% of our teachers are fully vaccinated right now which is in line with the national average. we look forward to making sure people have information and access to be able to make that private family choice about vaccination. we feel like since we were able to successfully navigate covid last year, frankly, 97% of our children did not have a positive test event for covid. we know based on our own experience that folks will follow our guidelines around hand washing and sanitation as well as the practical distancing. we feel that with that number of

especially as we're seeing the delta variant, which is much more transmissable and pummelling unvaccinated communities spreading around the u.s. >> the u.s. always had a hard time mobilizing collective effort to undertake basic aspects of pandemic control, like testing trays and testing and quarantining. we were bad at that from the beginning. at this point that seems like we're definitely not going back to that, so vaccination is really the key. what do we know about the delta? what are the three rules as you lay them out in your piece and what does that mean for american policy at this point? >> the three rules are pretty simple. first, the vaccines are still holding their own against the variants. second is that the variants are pummelling unvaccinated people. and the third is that the longer we allow the second dynamic to continue, the less likely the first will hold because we will get the evolution of more

july 4th. he did not make it, but he came close at 67% and will he reach the goal in awok weeker or so. where does the country need to be on vaccination rates to make sure that most citizens are safe from severe illness or death from covid? >> yes, rosemary, so unfortunately that is a moving target. the reason is now that we have the delta variant which is 60% more containing us and transmissable and guess what you are twice as likely to be hospitalized where the delta variant than the alpha fairant, when you have the contagious variants we have to move up the goal to 80, 85%. smed of woring about herd immunity, what we should worry about is getting the vaccines in as many arms as possible

mixing together. and since then, you know, in recent months they have been, you know. and so i think just having a bunch of individuals who weren't exposed to the virus the initial go-around have no immunity and are going out in public more, i think they are going to get it more. i think the other piece is the delta variant. it's more transmissable. we think potentially worse for kids. then, yeah, the kids who haven't been able to be vaccinated because of their age or who have just rolled into vaccinations in the last few months and, you know, they have run that risk. all of that goes together. >> what happens if we don't hit herd immunity, doctor? >> well, i think what happens is we do end up with pockets of clusters of coronavirus that pop up at various times. i thank the lord that this is an outdoor holiday. i am in a county with a 41% vaccination rate working the holiday weekend and luckily most people are gathering in beaches and backyards on their decks.

delta variant. >> kwloin say you're concerned. we know this idea of herd immunity is still something that's out there for our country. did that move the goal post? >> well, so we don't exactly know what the herd immunity percentage would be for covid-19. it would be different for the delta variant and higher, because it is more transmissable. so we will be continuing to watch that. but we know as you pointed out, that people who are vaccinated are protected against this delta variant. and they're extremely unlikely to get sick and it's virtually impossible for them to require hospitalizations. for people who are unvaccinated, the delta variant poses a threat. so in areas that have low vaccination rates, those communities and counties and states are vulnerable. >> polling this week showed about a third of people who haven't gotten vaccinated yet
