Hamilton, Wicked and Lion King set to reopen on Broadway this September

Hamilton, Wicked and The Lion King are among the musicals that plan on reopening in September.
The three shows released a joint press-release announcing their return. The statement served as a symbol of their solidarity for one another after 18 months of theatre closures.

The statement read: "This rare alliance between three of Broadway’s fan-favorites sends a message that Broadway is united in its commitment to ending a devastating period of hardship for the tens of thousands who make their living directly on Broadway shows and the tens of thousands in dependent industries."

Joe DiPietro: On the Friday, March 13, we met in my New York apartment to go over where we were with
Diana creatively and what we wanted to do when we got back. We were at my dining room table for probably four hours — exactly what you're not supposed to do — and then, two days later, I was talking to David Bryan on the phone, and he's coughing. I was like, "Are you OK?" And he's like, "You know, I think I'm just stressed."
Kelly Devine: I live alone, and two of my associates live alone. When it started to get really serious in New York City, I got us a house in the Poconos, we rented a car, and we self-isolated ourselves there. The day we got there, we

"A Very Strange Way to Stop": An Oral History of the Broadway Shutdown, Part 4

Sharon Wheatley:
Come From Away did a
Good Morning America 3 performance the morning of the shutdown. We were in a holding room there, and [cast member] Petrina Bromley looked around and she's like "Guys, what is this wall?" And I looked at this black and red wall and thought it was weird. Then we realized it was their Covid war room, where they do their nightly "This is what's happening with Covid" broadcasts. That was our holding room. But the irony was, there was a sink with no soap or hand towels. I went and found a janitor and told him, and he came back without soap, but gave us some towels.

Debra Messing: During our first week of rehearsal for
Birthday Candles in March, it didn't feel like it was possible for it to come in and wipe everything out. It was just starting to build. It was into the second week, the beginning of that second week, when there was just a very different feeling in the rehearsal room.
Lynn Nottage: I got sick that weekend. My daughter was here, and she got very sick, and subsequently, I got it. I don't even know if it was Covid or not, but I had a cough. I didn't want to take any chances if I had Covid and go to the theater and infect the singers. So I didn't go to the last performances of

"We're Next": An Oral History of the Broadway Shutdown, Part 2

Introduction to Part 2
Erika Henningsen: Our cast member Laura Shoop lives in New Rochelle, which was one of the first places with a large outbreak. She was the first person who was sharing information from a personal standpoint. Her kids were being sent home from school; there were whole communities that she was familiar with that had been shut down or were in quarantine. That hadn't trickled into New York City yet, but I think Laura was the first person who said, "Oh, this is going to be big."
Jessica Phillips: Most of the adults in our cast are parents, so we were having increasingly intense kinds of conversations about what was going to happen. We were seeing it unfold in the school systems.
