devices that can test for radiological components. so in many cases, the airlines have these, and the pilots have then. there could be a u.s. marshal aboard that plane because obviously from yemen to chicago, that's something that we look at carefully. >> bob, let me just jump in, i'm going to add this additional report to bring in more information. we have yet to confirm this so i want to caution everybody on this but one report says the ups cargo flight from yemen to chicago that was stopped in london was found to contain a toner cartridge converted to a bomb. one other network is citing sources on that. we're working to confirm that. but that's the information as we know it. >> right. and you know, these bits and pieces of information as they come in, they have to be evaluated carefully. but clearly, there's something -- it seems as if something is going on here. for a pilot to confirm it, that means he's actually done some field test -- test and could see that there was something there, if, in fact, that's true. so you know, this is a very
quarantined as newark airport, this out of an abundance of caution according to the transportation security administration because of suspicious items found on board those planes. there's a shot of the fox five helicopter on the way to the newark airport to get a look. joining us now on the phone is philadelphia fire commissioner lloyd ayres. i know that some of your personnel met this plane. what can you tell us about the flight in philadelphia that is being quarantined right now? >> yes, we were dispatched during our -- at the airport about 6335, we went out at 9:22, got on scene and our company did help to isolate that aircraft, we had three occupants that were removed. right now we have all teams in place, starting a joint command center. we have fire, atf, police, homeland security, and fbi,
investigated by law enforcement officials and they are moved -- have moved to this area where they can search the planes, while air traffic continues in and out of both airports, so if you're traveling you probably won't be affected at least not yet by these incidents but the tsa and other federal authorities, taking this very seriously, investigating cargo planes in both philadelphia and newark airport. what you're looking at now are some aerial -- it says newark, but this is not obviously the airport, but again, federal authorities investigating both of these situations for possibly suspicious packages on board these planes. we know that in philadelphia, apparently a crew member on board a u.s. flight noticed a suspicious package on the plane that he thought had radiological components to it and that's why he then called officials who then sparked that investigation. not sure what sparked the newark situation but again, federal authorities at both airports investigating cargo planes for possible
found in a flight coming to chicago from yemen. so if we can work on that while we're live, that would be great because i want to make sure we bring the most up to date information. but again, the first reports were something about the pilot thinking there was something radioactive. it was very bizarre. and jon mentioned this as well, as we were talking about this, jon. jon: it was unusual, the early reports indicated that the plane was -- made contact with authorities on the ground, while it was on final approach. that has to be coming from the pilot, concern aboutun with of the packages on board. and again, the early indication was that the package might have some kind of radiological threat. it would be very strange to me to imagine that a pilot somehow goes back into the cargo hold and notices a glowing package and i'm being slightly facetious there, you wouldn't expect the pilot to understand or know anything about some kind of a radiologic component in a package on board, would you bob? >> no, you wouldn't, but keep in mind we do have
developing story right now. as you're looking at philadelphia, we're also watching what's happening at newark airport as well, another ups flight there as well, you also have a suspicious package in brooklyn that we reported to you that law enforcement is checking out, as well, newark on your screen there. we're also taking a look and keeping up to date, what's happening in portland, maine and a suspicious package there. jon: let me unring the bell, because now sources are telling us there was no radiological component found on board one of these flights. we had earlier reported that federal reports had told fox off the record that there was such material found. no radiological components found on board the philadelphia flights, or any of the others to this point that we are aware of. let's just make that clear. no radiological component found. >> a quick update, jon from the fire department in newark, new jersey, the elizabeth fire department says the port authority has released them from newark
has been seized in the united kingdom. you just heard from our greg palkot some developments there, that there was indeed a suspicious package on ao flight in birmingham. jon: we've got greg on the phone and will get to him in a second. just wanted to point out, what terrorists are trying to do is scare us, trying to get us to change our ways, trying to disrupt our national life as much as possible. so far, flight delays at these big airports are minimal. that's why they put these planes well away from taxiways and trafficways, so that the very busy east coast traffic at newark liberty and philadelphia can go on as scheduled. we've actually checked with our west coast bureau, they have checked, and everything west of the rockies is running on time. no impact whatsoever on flights as a result of these security concerns over planes on the east coast. let's get back to greg palkot now. he's got some updated
about the worst, we're still trying to confirm if it's a terror plot and we don't know that. we're working on that. jon: let's check in with a guy who has sores all over the planet, bill gav ip is former head of the fbi office in -- gavin is former head of the fbi in new york city, any of your friends getting on your blackberry and telling you what they think is at work here? >> jon, quite frankly, there's been a couple -- a couple of inquiries, but the big thing here, this stresses a global standpoint as neil has been pointing out is the vulnerability of our transportation system. jon: especially air cargo. >> air cargo and you got to think about the ships as well. it's not out of the speckter, and when you talk about air krargo and -- air cargo and planes in general with al-qaeda and whatnot going after those as a target, you mentioned the lockerbie flight and think about the bochinko plot, the
packages were removed from the planes at philadelphia international airport. we can also report that after one of the crew members in philadelphia reported a possible radiological material in one of those packages, hazmat crews were dispatched and they did test three members from two planes for radiological members and all three tested negative, so none was found on the crew members, the packages may still be investigated, but that flight that landed in newark that was suspicious has, as we've been reporting, already taken off and landed in louisville, kentucky. so that newark situation has been cleared but two ups planes remain under suspicion at philadelphia international airport, the crew on those planes, though, did not test positive for any radiological material. jon: rick leventhal, thank you. >> we are confirming more information. fox news has confirmed that there is concern over several, that's a quote,
