Troops, Police Line Washington Streets for Biden Inauguration

The United States peacefully concluded a tense transfer of power Wednesday with newly elected President Joe Biden taking the oath of office on the steps of the U.S. Capitol without incident — just two weeks after the building was overrun by domestic extremists.

The January 6 siege left part of the Capitol building trashed and claimed the lives of five people, including a police officer.

Military Atmosphere Engulfs US Capital Before Biden Inauguration

Thousands upon thousands of troops are preparing to pour into an increasingly fortified Washington ahead of President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, as the district begins to remind some officials of beleaguered capitals such as Baghdad or Kabul, rather than the seat of government for the leader of the free world.

Military officials said Friday that 18,000 armed troops with the United States National Guard were expected to arrive in the U.S. capital over the next five days, in addition to the 7,000 sent in following the January 6 riot and siege of the U.S.

Inauguration Day security in DC: Everything we know so far

Will the National Mall be closed? What about First Amendment activities?
National Mall Superintendent Jeff Reinbold said the National Parks Service had worked with groups already permitted to use the area next week to find other venues for their activities. But, Reinbold said, there will be spaces for First Amendment activities on Inauguration Day, despite the Mall being closed.
“We are the premier First Amendment area in the country, in the world probably, and we wanted to see if we could do that,” Reinbold said.
Those areas will be located on Pennsylvania Avenue at the Navy Memorial and John Marshall Park. Reinbold said those wanting to exercise their First Amendment rights will have to pass through a magnetometer and will be escorted in and out of the area by U.S. Park Police.

'Unprecedented': Major inauguration security measures go into effect throughout DC

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and other officials provided more details of the “unprecedented” security for next week’s inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden.
Those measures include fencing off nearly the entire National Mall and widespread street closures and vehicle checks that will create a “hardened perimeter” around a large chunk of downtown D.C.
Late Friday evening, Virginia’s congressional delegation announced nearly all of the major bridges crossing the Potomac River from Virginia into D.C. would close next week, from early Tuesday morning to early Thursday morning.
