talking yet about the no labels possibility with senator manchin in new hampshire today byron. >> yeah. the thing that is driving this is a widespread public disgust with the idea of another joe biden donald trump matchup. a lot of the voters tonight don't want to see it. they are open to third parties. the no labels nomination i think they are on the ballot in more than a dozen states already. that is a very valuable thing. some people have dismissed it. it is a very valuable thing. some big name politician takes it that could make the numbers you just put up even more troubling for biden and trump. >> bret: jerome, former senator. former democratic vice presidential nominee was on today talking about the no labels deal. take a listen. we have said we will only do this if we feel it's constructive or make a real difference in our government and in our politics. and, secondly if we can get top

be. >> yeah, i'm going back to the original question there, which was do you believe donald trump has the character to be president again, and those were the answers they provided. garrett, we also heard from trump, just not on the same stage, last night. what's he telling voters in his comments in the run up to iowa's caucuses? >> reporter: well, donald trump's been doing everything heck for the last several months really to look past the primaries, to elevate himself as though he were the presumptive nominee trying to take on joe biden for the white house. we saw that throughout the course of this town hall event last night, and we really kind of looked at -- i can tell you, it is very much january. it feels like january in des moines, but this one particular comment made it sound more like june with donald trump saying he's got his vice presidential candidate already picked out. listen to what he told fox. >> if you are the nominee, which i know you expect to be, who would be in the running for vice president? >> well, i can't tell you that really. i mean, i know who it's going to
be -- >> give us a hint. >> we'll do another show sometime. >> reporter: trump walked back this comment, the idea that he had already selected his vice presidential candidate or at least his campaign did, but that's a comment that's going to launch a thousand ships today about donald trump basically asking like a presumptive nominee, ana. >> garrett haake reporting for us from des moines, thank you. congressman, when given the chance to attack trump's character, haley and desantis essentially dodged. they spent most of that debate attacking each other. how's that going to help them, either of them beat trump? >> well, ana, this is the high wire act that we have seen a lot of republicans try to pull off here during this primary season, and it's very difficult to do. now, that doesn't mean that this race for second place in the republican primary in iowa is irrelevant because of what's happening in new hampshire.
messenger, i would say he was a hypocrital messenger. the question was did he make a mistake or change his mind, but he knew then it was wrong and that, among other things, weighed him down. it's rare to hear politicians say i was making that mistake for ambition, an honest coping to the problem. what do you see in the tale of chris christie? >> it's been said that hypocrisy is the tribute that leads to virtue. chris christie is constantly going between vice and virtue.
the vice is his ego. he can't see past his own ego. in 2016 he was upset marco rubio was running attack ads on him. as a result hehi helped donald trump win the new hampshire primary andmp then he went and endorsed trump and said nice things about him because his ego needed the flattery of having thela gop nominee and then president, someone whoe calls m and talks to him and whom he advises. if you want to get rid of donald trump, everybody has to unite behind one candidate and consolidate the anti-trump forces in the republican party. that's not happened. christie could play a role in that. he could endorse nikki haley. he could light a fire under her campaign in new hampshire, making sure she wins and then she a has a month between that
