Margaret, an 80-year-old retiree who lives near Tulsa, Okla., has spent the past year fearing the coronavirus. She's constantly worn masks, toted hand sanitizer and used drive-throughs to run her errands. Her age and preexisting health conditions - including heart failure, diabetes and blood clots- put her at elevated risk if she gets sick.
But unlike many at-risk Americans seeking safety and an end to the pandemic, Margaret refuses to get a coronavirus vaccine.

WASHINGTON - By the light of 500 candles as "Amazing Grace" played outside the White House, President Joe Biden bowed his head in a minute of reflection on the 500,000 American lives lost to the coronavirus, crossing himself after the music faded out.
Moments earlier, the president noted that the U.S. death toll from the pandemic has exceeded both world wars and the Vietnam War combined.
"The people we lost were extraordinary," Biden said in the White House's Cross Hall. "They span generations. Born in America, immigrated to America. But just like that, so many of them took their final breath alone in America."

WASHINGTON - Former congressman Mark Walker learned early as a Southern Baptist pastor that you can't make everyone happy when preaching before thousands.
"If you say anything that has any conviction to it, you are at risk of losing people," he said.

WASHINGTON - President Joe Biden launched his administration with nearly 50 executive actions, variously described in the media as "a barrage," "a blitz" and "a burst."
If the public was struck by the sheer number of orders, however, the team that spent more than six months planning them struggled with the opposite problem: resisting the temptation to craft even more orders and reverse larger chunks of former president Donald Trump's agenda.
