'Nai Nai and Wai Po' director Sean Wang on authenticity over acclaim

The Academy Award-nominated short film “Nǎi Nai & Wài Pó" was born out of the emotional juxtaposition of joy and silliness amid the backdrop of anti-Asian hate crimes. First-generation Taiwanese American director Sean Wang, who had been living in New York City for over five years, decided it was time to return home in 2021 to the Bay Area where his grandmothers resided. At the time, his homecoming coincided with the rise of anti-Asian hate crimes, especially in San Francisco, where 84-year-old Vicha Ratanapakdee was shoved to the ground while he was out on a morning walk.

Shane Gillis' past use of racist, antisemitic slurs resurfaces ahead of 'SNL' return

Shane Gillis’ past use of racist, antisemitic and homophobic language has resurfaced on social media ahead of his return on “Saturday Night Live,” the same show that fired him for using an anti-Asian slur five years ago. Anti-Asian comments: The renewed attention to Gillis' controversial past comes after “SNL” announced that he will host the NBC comedy sketch show on Feb. 24. Gillis was fired by the same show in 2019 shortly after a 2018 video of him using an anti-Asian slur — "f*cking ch*nks" — surfaced following the announcement of his casting alongside Bowen Yang, among others.

Interview: Jay Park, Ted Park, Parlay Pass share the personal journeys behind their collab track 'Dance Like Jay Park Remix'

Back in 2020, Korean American artist Ted Park decided to visit rapper Parlay Pass in Atlanta after he felt his depression fully set over him in Jersey City during the initial wave of COVID-19. What was initially meant to be a two-week trip ended up becoming four months, resulting in the creation of multiple songs with Pass, including their hit 2020 track “Dance Like Jay Park.” The idea for the upbeat banger came to the musicians while they were in the basement studio of a mansion as Ted was vibing to some beats.

Watch: Pod of killer whales trapped in drift ice off Japan coast

A pod of killer whales, also known as orcas, was found trapped in a narrow drift ice off the coast of a town in Hokkaido, Japan, earlier this week, but officials believe that the marine mammals eventually freed themselves a day later. What happened: A fisherman reportedly spotted the orcas about 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) from the coast of Rausu, a town in Hokkaido, on Tuesday morning. Drone footage captured by a conservationist group shows about a dozen orcas — including a baby — bobbing up and down as they struggled to breathe while being trapped in a narrow space enclosed by the ice.

Argentine football star Lionel Messi has apologized to Chinese fans for skipping a friendly game in Hong Kong over the weekend due to an injury, only to be spotted playing in Japan days after. What happened: Inter Miami CF announced in December that it would be traveling to Hong Kong on Feb. 4, Sunday, to have a friendly match with an all-star Hong Kong team composed of some of the best football players in the First Division League at the 40,000-capacity Hong Kong Stadium. Several Chinese fans, some of whom paid as much as 4,880 Hong Kong dollars ($624) for tickets and traveled around 12 hours, booed and chanted “refund” when Messi spent the day on the bench.
