Foreign students in limbo as course accreditation revoked

Foreign students in limbo as course accreditation revoked
Around 800 foreign students in Malaysia are in limbo after the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) revoked accreditation for eight courses at the private Limkokwing University of Creative Technology (LUCT), which also operates a number of branch campuses elsewhere in Asia and in Africa.
Foreign students at the private university in Selangor state near Kuala Lumpur said numerous bachelors, MBA and PhD courses at LUCT Malaysia have had accreditation revoked by the MQA after students had already commenced the course.
This appeared to be due to an “inability to maintain certain requirements and standards set by the relevant authorities”, Limkokwing students said at a press conference earlier this month.

Row over plan for huge Fudan University campus in Budapest

Row over plan for huge Fudan University campus in Budapest
Hungary has officially signed an agreement with Fudan University, Shanghai – one of China’s most prestigious institutions – allowing work to begin on a branch campus in the Hungarian capital Budapest.
But the signing comes amid a raging row over taxpayer funding of the campus and claims by opposition Hungarian politicians that it will encroach on Budapest’s own plans for a big increase in accommodation for local students.
Under the deal signed in an online ceremony on 27 April by Hungary’s Innovation and Technology Minister László Palkovics and Fudan University President Xu Ningsheng, Hungary agreed to provide the land, buildings and facilities for the new Fudan Hungary campus – China’s first branch campus anywhere in Europe – set to open to students in 2024.

Corporate universities feel heat of political pressure

Corporate universities feel heat of political pressure
An elite private business school has been forced by Chinese authorities to halt new enrolments this month as its founder, Jack Ma, one of China’s richest men, faces problems over his business empire after he criticised China’s financial regulations.
Hupan University, which runs a highly selective executive training programme, suspended its first-year intake due to begin classes at the end of March, seen as fallout from the crackdown on Ma’s vast empire which includes online retail and digital payment systems.
Hupan University, sometimes known as Lakeside University, was founded in 2015 in Hangzhou in Zhejiang province, the city which hosts the headquarters of Ma’s Alibaba group, Asia’s biggest company by market capitalisation. Its stated aim is to teach entrepreneurship and business management to “high achievers”.

Online degrees piloted with Australian universities

Online degrees piloted with Australian universities
Vietnam has embarked on a pilot project with five Australian universities to offer online and blended degree courses in partnership with Vietnamese universities, under a new directive allowing foreign providers to offer online courses.
This could open a new chapter for blended learning in transnational education where foreign universities offer their own degrees or joint degrees with local universities, experts say.
Vietnam is one of the first countries in Asia to officially allow online delivery of foreign degrees to students within the country, also known as transnational education or TNE, with other countries hesitant to change their regulations, fearing a pandora’s box of unrestricted and unmonitored ‘entry’ of foreign providers using the online space.

Universities fear researcher pipeline is under threat

Universities fear researcher pipeline is under threat
With increasing global and regional competition for doctoral students to fuel expansion in technology-based industries, even top universities in Asia are beginning to worry about a continued pipeline of well-qualified students in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) areas as countries expand research in key areas such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, genetics, nanotechnology, robotics and other areas.
Global competition has been enhanced by the rivalry between China and the United States in technology, with the US also pressuring Europe and Japan to curb research with China that is deemed sensitive.
For Asian countries attracting foreign STEM PhD students, the largest contingent has come from China. Countries such as Japan are already talking of more stringent vetting of PhD students from countries including China for more strategically sensitive PhD subjects, and having to rely on local students or foreign students from other countries in the region.

So many new universities – Where will the staff come from?

So many new universities – Where will the staff come from?
As part of China’s plan to turn Southern Guangdong province into a technology hub – under the Greater Bay Area plan for Hong Kong, Macau and nine cities in Guangdong with a combined population of 72 million – 11 new universities are on track to open for enrolment this year alone, with many more planned for the next few years.
Some are brand new institutions and others are branch campuses of existing universities or expanded new campuses with new degree-awarding powers. But with such fast and massive expansion, some experts question whether they can attract enough faculty with doctoral degrees to ensure the quality education the region aspires to.
