Australia joins Brazil, Mexico and Russia as global climate laggard

24 April 2021
A new analysis conducted by Climate Action Tracker shows that the the raft of new climate commitments announced at the United States ‘Leaders Climate Summit’ event will reduce global emissions by between 2.6 and 3.7 gigatonnes of CO2-e, a 12 to 14% decrease on predicted levels.
That is substantial, but a gap of between 20 and 24 gigatonnes of CO2-e remains to be close to achieving a 1.5C climate target as stipulated in the 2015 Paris Climate agreement.
“President Biden’s summit has led to the single biggest reduction in the 2030 emissions gap – at 12-14% – that we’ve ever seen, and has also reinforced the centrality of the 1.5°C limit in the Paris agreement as a global goal,” said Bill Hare of Climate Analytics, a partner in the Climate Action Tracker. Japan, Canada, the US and Japan announced updated 2030 Paris targets, known as ‘Nationally Determined Contributions” (NDCs). ....

Morrison mute on targets at Biden climate summit

The transmission technology initially failed when it was Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s turn to speak, which seemed apt as he continued to refuse to put a carbon emissions target for 2030.
Called by United States President Joe Biden, the summit was aimed at raising emissions reduction targets in the lead-up to COP26 in Glasgow in November.
The US used the summit to announce its decision to raise its emissions reduction target to 50-52% below 2005 levels by 2030.
US climate campaigners want for a target well above 50%. Karen Orenstein, Climate and Energy Program Director at Friends of the Earth, US, said
Biden’s commitment may seem ambitious, but it is “sharply inadequate and deeply unjust for the billions living in the Global South”. ....

Fifty-one years is a long time a good run. Certainly not a momentous year, or milestone. That was last year. But this year I launched The NetPositive Podcast and for our podcast’s first Earth Day, we feature an interview with Denis Hayes. He was the national coordinator of the first Earth Day in 1970, and founder of the Earth Day Network. He is credited with creating the largest secular movement in the world.
By 1990, Earth Day was “mobilizing” 200 million people in 190 countries. By now, and in collaboration with 75,000 partner organizations, Earth Day has mobilized a billion people worldwide. ....
