Left Voice on the RWDSU debacle at Amazon: A lawyers' brief for union executives

Left Voice on the RWDSU debacle at Amazon: A lawyers’ brief for union executives
After a lengthy campaign, backed by President Biden and substantial sections of the political establishment and corporate media, the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) received only 738 votes in favor, or less than 13 percent of the 5,800 workers at the Bessemer, Alabama, Amazon warehouse.
The humiliating rejection of the RWDSU by Amazon workers has produced a wave of rationalizations and apologetics from the pseudo-left attorneys for the RWDSU executives.

Two events over the past week brought from the shadows an aspect of policing that has generally received little attention or public comment: the police foundation.
Last week, new Surrey Police Service chief constable Norm Lipinski announced that a Surrey Police Foundation “should be set up and going ‘full on’ by early next year”.
Then, only a few days later, on February 22, came a news report that Vancouver real estate developer Peter Wall had made a $1-million donation to the Vancouver Police Foundation (VPF), to be directed at police services in the Downtown Eastside. The response to news of Wall’s donation to the VPF, and especially his plans for how that money should be used, has been sharp and negative.

Biden must pass the Protecting the Right to Organize Act

I grew up 300 miles away from President-elect Joe Biden in a small town called Nemacolin, Pennsylvania. Nemacolin was a company town, meaning the mining company owned everything. Every house, every store and seemingly every square foot belonged to the mining company. There were two exceptions: the union hall and Our Lady of Consolation Church, which was at the heart of our town's Catholic community.
Back in the 1920s and 1930s, it seemed like nothing and no one could stand in the way of the coal companies' pursuit of profit. After all, they had a special police force — the Coal and Iron Police. The companies' private guards threatened and attacked — even murdered — miners who tried to stand together to form our union — the United Mine Workers of America.
