One of my husbandâs favorite things to watch on TV is âNoir Alleyâ on Turner Classic Movies. Itâs the networkâs showcase of noir films, stylish Hollywood dramas â mostly crime dramas â that often emphasized cynical attitudes and motivations. I donât always watch the films with him, but the ones I have watched have opened my eyes to good films I would have never known otherwise featuring femme fatales taking mysterious leading men down the wrong path. Iâve enjoyed performances from some of the genreâs greatest stars, including Robert Mitchum and Barbara Stanwyck. But my favorite part each week, even when I donât watch the movie, is hearing the introduction and wrap-up of the film from âAlleyâ host Eddie Muller. Muller is the founder and president of the nonprofit Film Noir Foundation, which has been responsible for restoring and preserving more than 30 lost noir classics. Known as the âCzar of Noir,â Muller offers a ton of interesting facts about the films he personally chooses to share on TCM.

Yet summer’s here and the time is right for skulking in the murderously foggy streets, thanks to a three-day festival of vintage ’40s and ’50s crime dramas being presented this weekend at the newly reopened Hollywood Legion Theater by the Film Noir Foundation.
Print For decades, Hollywood has brushed off the Golden Globe Awards as a kind of collective inside joke, a fun, freewheeling party holding no grand importance. “That award is, no offense, worthless,” Ricky Gervais told the assembled crowd of stars while hosting the ceremony in 2016. But in reality, for all the criticism long directed at the group that hands out the Globes — the tiny, secretive 86-member Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. — the entertainment industry has become deeply invested in the awards. Millions of dollars are poured collectively into trying to win them and millions more flow from the prizes into such things as box office returns, publicists’ bonuses and boosted star salaries.

TCM Fest and a Year of Virtual Film Festivals Twitter 0 comments It was only about 10 days into the global lockdown last year when Turner Classic Movies made the fateful decision to cease its annual in-person film festival in Hollywood. They were the first major festival to do make that call. To their credit, they made it quickly and decisively. It took some conventions way too long to make the smart, admittedly disappointing decision. Now, 13 months after the initial TCM Classic Film Festival Home Edition, the second such fest has concluded. It took everything great about the in-person fest and did their damnedest to replicate it at home. They couldn’t have done better. And still…
