They were invented during the 1880s to early 1890s and, according to Rad Power Bikes, one of the first patents in America was owned by Ogden Bolton Jr. in 1895 for a battery-powered bicycle with a motor hub attached inside the rear wheel.
Petersen explains that there are currently three classes of e-bikes.
“Class 1 being pedal assist only, with no throttle, and have a maximum assisted speed of 20 mph,” Petersen said. “Class 2 having a maximum assisted speed of 20 mph, but are throttle assisted. Class 3 being pedal assist only, with no throttle, and a maximum assisted speed of 28 mph. All classes limited to the motor’s power to 1 hp (750 watts).”
