On 5/3/21 at 10:23 AM EDT
President Joe Biden warned the truth is under attack and said that authoritarians are trying to undermine the media in a statement issued for World Press Freedom Day.
The day falls on May 3 and it honors the work of journalists and the press, as well as highlighting those who operate under difficult and sometimes dangerous conditions in different parts of the world.
Biden issued a statement on the White House website on Monday praising journalists and calling on them to continue holding those in power to account. He also offered a stark warning about efforts to curtail the media. ....

Des Moines Journalist Arrested While Covering Social Justice Protests Faces Trial Monday

AP
Police officers are shown arresting Des Moines Register reporter Andrea Sahouri after a Black Lives Matter protest she was covering on May 31 in Des Moines was dispersed by tear gas. Many free press advocates, like Amnesty International and the Iowa Freedom of Information Council, have called on the charges against Des Moines Register reporter Andrea Sahouri to be dropped. The program director for the Committee to Protect Journalists says not only should the charges be dropped, but an investigation should be launched looking into what lead to the arrest of a working journalist who identified herself as a member of the press. ....

Donald Trump’s open hostility toward the media will be one of the hallmarks of his presidency. His resentment of the press using terms like “fake news” and “the enemy of the people” even as one of his supporters mailed explosives to news agencies will be cemented in history.
It’s understandable that the potential for Trump’s departure to offer a breath of fresh air has become an ongoing talking point for cable news stations and social media echo chambers. But historical precedent suggests it is very unlikely.  ....
