It’s Saskatoon-born Hollywood actor Kim Coates urging everyone to support the Biggar main Street Revitalizataion project. He says he and his parents and brothers would often visit the Biggar area because they have family there. Biggar’s Community Development Officer, D’Shae Bussiere, lists off some of Kim Coates television and movie credits, which include Sons of Anarchy, Bad Blood, Black Hawk Down and Battlefield Earth. The goal is to raise $2.5-million which will be matched by the Brownlee Family Foundation. It’s a big goal for a town of 2,500 with the surrounding R.M. population at around 800, but D’Shae says a few years ago when the idea for the revitalization was in its beginnings, community members were asked if they thought it was a reachable goal, and the answer was a resounding yes.
SASKATOON -- A Saskatoon-born actor who has made his mark in Hollywood is showing his support for the Town of Biggar. “This is about the streetscape. We need better sidewalks, we need flowers, we need some things to pop in that incredible community. It’s time. It’s beyond time,” Kim Coates said in a video posted to the town’s Facebook page. The town is in the process of raising money for its revitalization project, which involves refurbishing Main Street and transforming the Canadian National Railway grounds into a multi-use park with a market area, festival stage and historic garden.
Before making it big in Hollywood, Coates had his humble beginnings growing up in Saskatoon. In the video, Coates recalled the times he would go through Biggar with his family to visit nearby relatives. “Biggar’s my favourite town, you all know that,” Coates said. “How ‘bout a revitalization project for Biggar? This is about the streetscape, we need better sidewalks, we need flowers, we need some things to pop that incredible community. It’s time. it’s beyond time.” The Biggar revitalization project will revamp and upgrade the downtown core and Main Street, and transform the CNR grounds into a multi-use park and tourist hub. The approved concept plan was released in April and focuses on four zones: the gateway entrance, transition zone, business core and the grand central park.

Parish council conversation Monday about rules for solar farms was not over halting the development of the guidelines. Rather, the talk was about how long to continue the temporary halt. Councilwoman Kim Coates, chairwoman of the development regulations committee, wanted to extend the halt for 60 days. Half the 10-member council wanted to limit the extension to only 30 days, but the council ended up voting 7-3 to consider extending the halt for 60 days. The proposed 60-day extension will be up for a council vote at the next council meeting. The committee has been meeting every two weeks to propose guidelines for solar panel farms and commercial solar power plants, and Coates said they still have more housekeeping matters to work out.
Tangipahoa Parish Council members want more time to consider regulations for solar farms. The current moratorium on consideration of and/ or approval of all solar panel farms or commercial solar power plants in the parish is set to expire June 9. Extending the ban for another 90 days is on the agenda for the council meeting Monday in Amite. âWe are trying to move forward as quickly as possible, while taking the time necessary to make sure we come up with the best ordinance for the industry, the landowners and the parish,â said Brigette Hyde, District 9 councilwoman and council president. âWe have gotten a lot accomplished in the last few weeks and have a really good draft of the ordinance,â she said. âWe have recommendations from the Public Service Commission, lawmakers and even representatives from the solar industry that we extend the moratorium and not rush through an ordinance that may not serve everyoneâs best interest.â
