Asian/Black Relations Can Get Better Together During Heritage Month

San Francisco, CA. – Mayor London N. Breed today announced the City of San Francisco is planning a new public art installation to honor Black lives and the history of African Americans. The installation is planned to be located in Golden Gate Park’s Music Concourse next month, in time for Juneteenth.
The installation, ‘Monumental Reckoning,’ by Bay Area sculptor Dana King, honors the first Africans stolen from their homeland and sold into chattel slavery in the New World. The installation consists of 350 sculptures representing the number of Africans initially forced onto the slave ship San Juan Bautista for a journey of death and suffering across the Atlantic in 1619. A handful of these original 350 ancestors became America’s first enslaved people.

H.E.R. called for musicians and filmmakers to use their platforms responsibly at the Academy Awards on Sunday, April 25.
The singer, real name Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson, took home the award for Best Original Song for "Fight For You" from "
Judas and the Black Messiah" and spoke about the importance of using art to "tell the truth" when she got on stage to accept the honor.

Tyler Perry was given the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for his dedication to creating a safe work environment during the ongoing pandemic; his Camp Quarantine was a 30-page plan for work bubble safety and health compliance. And we have the first Korean actress to win the Best Supporting Actress category. Plus a half Pinay R&B singer takes home an Oscar for her co-writing credit for Best Original Song.

H.E.R’s ‘Fight For You’ took home the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 2021 Oscars last night. The song, which featured in the film 
Judas and the Black Messiah and was co-written with Tiara Thomas, won over songs from 
The Trial of the Chicago 7 (‘Hear My Voice’),
Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (‘Husavik”),
The Life Ahead (La Vita Davanti a Se) (‘Io Sì (Seen)’), and
One Night in Miami (‘Speak Now’).
“I did not expect to win this award. I am so, so, so grateful, not only to win but to be a part of such an important, important story,” H.E.R.,  whose real name is Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson, said in her acceptance speech. “Musicians, filmmakers, I believe we have an opportunity and a responsibility, to tell the truth, and to write history the way that it was, and how it connects us to today, and what we see going on in the world today.”

After winning the Best Original Song at Sunday night's 2021 Oscars ceremony, the 23-year-old singer — who took home the honour alongside Tiara Thomas and Dernst "D'Mile" Emile II for "Fight for You" from Judas and the Black Messiah — revealed her plans for further accolades during an interview via People magazine.  When asked about being halfway to EGOT status (the title for winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony) the singer, who has four Grammy Awards under her belt, said, "There's absolutely going to be an EGOT in my future, hopefully."
