Staten Island voters could see a new political party on their general election ballots: “Staten Island First,” THE CITY has learned.
Mark Murphy, the Staten Island Democratic Party-backed candidate for borough president, is collecting signatures with two other Democrats to run in the general election on his new independent ballot line whose name echoes the Trumpian “America First” motto. Murphy wouldn’t say directly whether he’ll wage an active third-party run if he loses the June primary, responding, “I am a Democrat. I always support Democrats.”

BBC - Travel - Quilting: An Irish tradition fit for pandemic times

By Alexandra Marvar
17 March 2021
When Sarah Harris moved from her home of 20 years in Ireland back to her native Colorado, she brought the quilting business she’d started in County Wicklow with her, making commissions of "memory quilts", patchwork designs composed of baby blankets, graduation gowns or old clothes from deceased loved ones. Before she’d turned it into a business, quilting was something she did for herself – a way of connecting with her mother and grandmother, both quilters in the US, in spirit and in practice.
"My mom and I would make two of the same quilt," Harris said. "We would start it together [in Colorado] when I would visit, and then continue to make them separately when I went back to Ireland, working on them at the same time, so we would each have one – the same, but separate."

Ranked Choice Voting Takes Backseat in New York City Debut

Ben Fractenberg/THE CITY
Voting ended for New York City’s first ranked choice election Tuesday — with one candidate holding such a sizable lead that counting votes beyond the top pick on each ballot may not be necessary.
Democrat James Gennaro reaped more than 3,200 first-place votes out of upwards of 5,500 cast on Tuesday and during nine days of early voting in the crowded special election contest for a southeast Queens City Council seat.
Up to 2,000 absentee ballots had yet to be counted — meaning it could still be weeks before an official winner is announced in the snow-snagged eight-candidate race.
But if his margin remains above 50%, Gennaro will automatically win the special election, called to fill a vacancy left by former Councilmember Rory Lancman. In that event, no tally of voters’ ranked choices of up to four additional candidates will take place.

UNC Asheville LGBTQ+ Archive Expands To Jackson County

Reporter Lilly Knoepp talks about the expansion of a Western North Carolina LGBTQ+ oral history archive to Western Carolina University with Assistant Professor of English Travis Rountree and Head of Research and Instruction Services at Hunter Library Sarah Steiner.
A project to document the lives of LGBTQ+ people in Western North Carolina is expanding.
“I think it's really important to show, to demonstrate that there is indeed a history here and has been,  for a long time,” said Rountree, a WCU assistant professor of English.
For Rountree, this project is about making the queer community in rural Western North Carolina more visible.

CHICAGO, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- Year 2020 is difficult: COVID-19 has disrupted people's daily life, locking them down at home most of the time. But in hardship, people have enjoyed the unexpected and are fostering hope.
The saddest thing for Vincent Johnson in 2020 is his father passing away. To his comfort, the 47-year-old photographer in Chicago was able to visit his father for a week before he died in San Antonio, Texas.
