Birmingham: The Birmingham VA Health Care System is expanding its ability to vaccinate veterans against COVID-19, provided it can get enough doses. A partnership with the United Way of Central Alabama will allow the agency to provide as many as 1,000 shots a day beginning this week to veterans who are at least 65 years old, the VA said. That’s up from the current daily total of 300 people. The change comes because the VA’s vaccine clinic is moving into a United Way building in downtown Birmingham. Chief executive Stacy Vasquez said the system will schedule as many veterans as it can for shots, but obtaining additional vaccine is key. “Right now, I have enough vaccine to take care of 5,000 people next week. But then after that, unless I get another shipment, I don’t know,” Vasquez told WBRC-TV last week. The ....

Early antibiotic exposure linked with reduced growth in boys

Giving newborn baby boys antibiotics could stunt their growth in the early years of life, a new study suggests.
Antibiotic treatment within 14 days of birth is linked with reduced weight and height in boys – but not girls – up to the age of six, experts found.
The researchers think the differences may result from changes in the development of the gut microbiome – the trillion-strong community of beneficial microorganisms.
However, antibiotics administered to babies older than 28 days could have the opposite effect, the research team also found.
Antibiotic use after the neonatal period (the first 28 days of life) but during the first six years of life was linked with higher body mass index, in both boys and girls.  ....

Thought LeadersDr. David BrodyProfessor of NeurologyUniformed Services University
In this interview, News-Medical speaks to Dr. David Brody about his latest research that involved discovering nanobodies produced by llamas that could help combat coronavirus.
What provoked your research into the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic?
We are neuroscientists, so it was a bit of a shift in direction! For several years TJ and I had been testing out how to use nanobodies to make brain imaging better. When the pandemic broke, we thought this is a once in a lifetime, all-hands-deck situation and joined the fight. ....
