Over half of people in democracies feel freedoms...

Fifty-eight percent of people living in the world’s democracies are satisfied with the response of their government to the Covid-19 pandemic though over half believe their freedoms have been overly restricted, a survey published on Wednesday found.
The survey of over 50,000 people from 53 countries also found that a little more than half feel their nation is democratic but many view economic inequality and the power of big tech companies as threats to democracy.

Disappearing freedoms

Disappearing freedoms
April 21, 2021
Pakistan currently stands at the 145th position among 179 countries in the World Press Freedom Index 2021 published by the international media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF). This means it has slipped even further down the list from last year – when it was on the equally unenviable 142nd position. As such, journalists in the country today have had to internalize the pressures they face – to the extent that self-censorship has become an unfortunate by-product of their jobs. Meanwhile, shibboleths of the state cannot be challenged, and anything deemed a threat is either vilified or silenced. Both national and international observers and media professionals have cited the various ways pressure is exerted on the media in Pakistan – be it electronic, print, or social.

China's crackdown in Hong Kong has left Japanese finance firms "very much afraid" and reconsidering whether to remain in the city, a senior banker said Monday in a rare public declaration of concern from within the industry.
Yoshitaka Kitao, chief executive of financial conglomerate SBI Holdings, which runs Japan's largest online brokerage, told the Financial Times he was planning to pull his company's operations out of the southern Chinese city, arguing that "without freedom, there is no financial business".
Other Japanese companies, he told the newspaper, were thinking about doing the same but were less willing to say so openly.

Aucklanders are flocking to the malls and restaurants after a week of being stuck at home with reports a KFC on the North Shore was temporarily without chicken.
As the patchy weather is keeping people off the beaches and outside, shoppers at some Auckland malls including Glenfield Mall are reporting huge queues.

Kazakh Opposition Protesters Detained

Anti-government protests took place across Kazakhstan on February 28. Police detained protesters in Aqtobe, while a rally in Oral that had been sanctioned by local authorities took place without detentions. Protesters demanded political freedoms and slammed the enduring power grab by former President Nursultan Nazarbaev. The rallies were organized by two opposition groups -- the Democratic Party and Democratic Choice of Kazakhstan.
