New Funding Sought for Liaisons Who Connect New American Families With Schools

Noor Bulle (right) speaking with Burlington parent Zainab Gabow
There's no concise job description for Noor Bulle's work in Burlington schools. As one of the district's 11 multilingual liaisons, Bulle is part of a team that helps families with limited English proficiency navigate the school system and engage in their children's education.
The 2008 Burlington High School graduate, who speaks both Somali and Maay Maay, works with New American families whose children attend the high school, Champlain Elementary School and Ira Allen Early Education Center. Depending on the day, he might translate during a meeting about a child's schoolwork, help parents understand a report card or newsletter, convey important information from the superintendent, or assist families with bills or paperwork.

Older Pennsylvanians, who are supposed to be among the first in line to get the vaccine, are also struggling with clunky and disjointed online signups.

Natalie J. Gale | Magazine | The Harvard Crimson

Natalie J. Gale ’21 spent the first half of her studio art class training to handle equipment that she never got the chance to use. Instead, she found herself constructing a soldering workshop in her garage to produce the stained glass art she had hoped to create on campus.
A joint concentrator in History and Literature and Art, Film, and Visual Studies, Gale feels campus’s absence through the artistic spaces she often occupied. “I really miss this one room in the Carpenter Center where you can just camp out for 12 hours and just print photos,” she says.
In March, Gale swapped Dunster House for her home in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, a small town outside of Portland. And although the swift goodbyes forced by a truncated semester were somber, returning home grounded her during “a very turbulent moment.”

Grants to New Roots farmers aimed at tackling systemic racism, COVID-19 challenges

Owners of New Roots Cooperative Farm in Lewiston have been awarded two grants aimed at tackling systemic racism in Maine, bringing the farmers closer to their goal of owning the land they farm.
New Roots is a Somali Bantu-led cooperative farm that's been in operation since 2016, and sells produce both wholesale and retail to the Lewiston-Auburn community and in southern Maine. A $50,000 grant from the Elmina B. Sewall Foundation to the farm is part of the foundation’s emergency Twin Pandemic grant program, aimed at the disproportionate impact that COVID-19 and systemic racism have had on Maine’s communities, particularly Black, Indigenous and People of Color.
