New Book Looks at City's 50 Oldest Buildings, Including One on Pinckney Street – Beacon Hill Times

A new book that looks at the 50 oldest buildings in the city includes only one on Beacon Hill, which admittedly came as somewhat of a surprise to the author.
“I figured there would have been a least a couple of them, but Beacon Hill as a neighborhood kind of appeared out of nowhere around 1800,” said Joseph M. Bagley, the city’s archeologist and author of “Boston’s Oldest Buildings and Where to Find Them” (2021 Brandeis University Press). “The reality is if I had made it ‘Boston’s 100 Oldest Buildings and Where to Find Them,’ at least half of them would be in Beacon Hill or in Charlestown.”

OPINION COLUMN: Mansfield and 5th Regiment Massachusetts Colored Volunteer Cavalry

OPINION COLUMN: Mansfield and 5th Regiment Massachusetts Colored Volunteer Cavalry
Kevin McNatt and Andrew Todesco
MANSFIELD - The U.S. census of 1860 shows no African-Americans living in Mansfield at the outbreak of the Civil War. But town clerk records show that nine “colored” men enlisted from Mansfield. So who were these men who responded to the call to arms?
During the war the federal government set enlistment quotas for each state. They would have to produce a certain number of volunteers for the war effort. In turn the Commonwealth imposed a quota on every city and town.
Early in the war enthusiasm was high. Willing volunteers were easy to find. But they were harder to come by as the war dragged on. When towns couldn’t meet their enlistment quota they paid a bounty to out-of-towners who were “credited” to that town.

Jerusalem's Deputy Mayor Hassan-Nahoum is on a Mission: Muslim Tourism and Women's Rights

Felice Friedson
Official sees economic prosperity as the key to peace
Fleur Hassan-Nahoum grew up in Gibraltar and studied law at King’s College London, where she practiced until immigrating to Israel in 2001. There, she became the executive director of Tikva, a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving abandoned and abused Jewish children from the former Soviet Union, and later established a communications consulting business.
In 2016, Hassan-Nahoum was elected to the Jerusalem Municipal Council, rising to opposition leader one year later. Upon her re-election in 2018, she was appointed deputy mayor for foreign relations, economic development and tourism.
Hassan-Nahoum is deeply involved in the advancement of women’s rights and marginalized population groups in the city: its economic development, and for a pluralistic Jerusalem. Hassan-Nahoum is also the co-founder of the UAE-Israel Business Council and Gulf-Israel Women’s Forum.
