The Other Regional Counter-Revolution: Iran's Role in the Shifting Political Landscape of the Middle East

The Other Regional Counter-Revolution: Iran’s Role in the Shifting Political Landscape of the Middle East

The last decade has seen historic political upheavals across the Middle East and North Africa: a tsunami of popular uprisings that have brought down several dictators and led to momentous transformations in political consciousness, if not always to democratic outcomes. But the last decade has also seen a concomitant counter-revolutionary roll-back across the region: authoritarian regimes, entrenched elites, ruling classes, deep states, and reactionary forces have marshalled considerable resources to torpedo these movements from below.[1]

New Book by STPEC's Shemon Salam Examines the Uprising Following the Killing of George Floyd | Office of News & Media Relations

March 31, 2021
Shemon Salam
Shemon Salam, lecturer in the social thought and political economy (STPEC) program, has co-authored a timely new book, “The Revolutionary Meaning of the George Floyd Uprising,” which was published shortly before the current trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer charged with killing Floyd in May 2020. The death of Floyd, of course, sparked protests large and small, peaceful and sometimes violent, across America.
“The Black proletariat led the charge,” reads the description of the book, published by Daraja Press, “but white, Latinx, Asian and Indigenous proletarians also joined the fight, demonstrating new possibilities for building alliances. While anti-police rebellions continued throughout the summer and fall, the uprising receded with the start of the winter. But this conflict is far from over.”

Is this revolution truly rinky-dink? | Links International Journal of Socialist Renewal

February 5, 2021 —
Links International Journal of Socialist Renewal — During the late ’60s, when the United States war on Viet Nam was going strong and people were questioning capitalism, I drove from Eugene to Berkeley where my sister was living. I ran into folks who invited me to a discussion about starting a commune. There, everyone talked about dropping out of consumer society and buying land to get away from it all. Asking about how you could confront the horrors around us by separating yourself from society, I got a string of denunciations accusing me of buying into what I claimed to oppose.
