The Ohioana Book Festival will be virtual again this year, and will feature 137 authors

How things have changed over 15 years for the Ohioana Book Festival.
In 2007, when the festival began, it was patterned after the National Book Festival begun by first lady Laura Bush in 2001. The first Ohioana Book Festival featured 20 writers, all of whom had contributed the essays in the book “Good Roots: Writers Reflect on Growing Up in Ohio.” About 100 people attended the festival, which took place at the State Library of Ohio.
Last year, as the festival was about to take place at the Columbus Metropolitan Library, COVID-19 struck. The festival was delayed until August, when, with the pandemic still in full force, it was held online for the first time. There were 5,500 “live” attendees and an estimated 45,000 additional people participating through various social media, podcast and broadcast venues.

Mark Camilleri announces election for book council top job

Chief executive of the National Book Council Mark Camilleri has announced an election will be held for the top post of the cultural body in a bid to halt a system where the leadership of cultural entities is appointed solely by the government.
In a statement published by the National Book Council, Camilleri said that he would be contesting the said election, which authors and publishers are invited to vote on, and hoped to serve a further three years in his post, which he has occupied since 2013.
With a mandate from the National Congress of Writers, Camilleri said he hoped to continue restoration works on a Valletta palazzo to be transformed into a centre for literacy and a bookshop, as well as to continue advocating for the use of the Mediterranean Conference Centre as the venue for the National Book Festival.

U.S. Poet Joy Harjo: ‘There’s a Poem Out There That Can Change Your Life’
After a year of pandemic and racial tension, U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo finds comfort and lessons in poetry.
“Those moments that are the most terrifying, empowering, grief-filled, joy-filled, they are always accompanied by poetry,” Harjo said in an interview with the Library of Congress, where she is serving her third term as poet laureate. “There’s always a poem out there that can change your life.”

Jill Biden redefines role of first lady

Biden stands on the shoulders of her predecessors as she redefines the role of first lady in American culture. Too often, first ladies have been relegated to the secondary stories of history, often perceived as serving a supportive yet subordinate role in the White House and their husbands’ presidential administrations. However, there were several 20th-century examples of first ladies who challenged accepted societal norms and modernized the position.
Eleanor Roosevelt wrote a daily newspaper column as first lady, donating her pay to charity. Her journalism only scratched the surface of the barriers she broke. Perhaps the most remarkable precedent was her ability to establish a voice independent from her husband’s on a controversial, contemporary topic. Mrs. Roosevelt’s thoughts on race changed dramatically over her lifetime. By the time she served as first lady, she had become an outspoken advocate for federal anti-lynching legislation. President Roosevelt did not want to risk losing southern Democratic backing in Congress for his New Deal initiatives, so he refused to signal support for proposed anti-lynching bills. However, when Mrs. Roosevelt asked him whether she should temper her opinion, he demurred. Eleanor Roosevelt was popular in her own right, and FDR believed her support for the growing Civil Rights Movement and anti-lynching proposals bolstered his standing with the left flank of his party. Mrs. Roosevelt demonstrated that even as early as the 1930s, the first lady could speak with her own considerable, independent authority.

Book Council says MCC prioritising Cirque du Soleil instead of book festival

Book Council says MCC prioritising Cirque du Soleil instead of book festival
National Book Council says it risks losing traditional November slot for book festival due to Cirque du Soleil pre-booking
19 January 2021, 10:02am
by Laura Calleja
The National Book Council has said it risks losing its traditional November slot at the Mediterranean Conference Centre due to a pre-booking for the month by the Cirque du Soleil spectacular.
The NBC appealed to the government to ensure that it retains unreserved access to the Mediterranean Conference Centre to organise the 2021 National Book Festival from 10 to 14 November.
“it is with great regret that it has been informed that it will not be able to make use of the Republic Hall for the Malta Book Festival, as it will instead be used for the publicly-subsidised show of international circus actors Cirque de Soleil,” the NBC said.

Kids' book on friendship a natural for Kansas City illustrator and buddy Taye Diggs

Kids' book on friendship a natural for Kansas City illustrator and buddy Taye Diggs
Dan Kelly, The Kansas City Star
Jan. 11—Award-winning Kansas City illustrator Shane Evans says he has been "friends forever" with actor Taye Diggs. So it is appropriate that their most recent collaboration — their fourth children's book — is called "My Friend!"
When Evans and Diggs appeared on NBC's "Today" show Jan. 5 to promote "My Friend!," which went on sale that day, Diggs said, "It was all Shane's brain baby."
Evans told The Star that the kernel of the book's idea came from when the two friends, who had met in high school in Rochester, New York, attended Syracuse University in the early 1990s. They worked together on a project about what being Black meant to them.
