The 'Godfather of the Television Movie' started out at Ziv and Screen Gems before launching his own company and taking it private.
Charles W. Fries, the prolific producer and executive who was known as the "Godfather of the Television Movie," died Thursday in Los Angeles, his family announced. He was 92.
In 1974, he formed Charles Fries Productions, which later became Fries Entertainment. By one estimate, he and his company produced and/or supervised more than 275 hours of telefilms, miniseries and series.
Fries had his greatest impact during the period he described in his autobiography as "the golden days of the television movie" — the 25-year period from 1968-93.

As diversity initiatives continue to shape Hollywood, many conversations have begun surrounding Black representation and what that means for the entertainment industry. While there has been a significant increase in representation, there is always more work to be done, but the question of what makes “good” representation is now taking center stage.
Miranda Wayland, BBC’s diversity manager, spoke about diversity in television on Monday, specifically using the hit show, Luther, as an example.

In a recent conference, Miranda Wayland, the Head of Creative Diversity at the BBC, said that Idris Elba’s character
Luther “doesn’t feel authentic.”
Speaking about what can be done with the
Times, Miranda stated: “It’s about making sure that everything around them — their environment, their culture, the set — is absolutely reflective.”
Neil Cross, the creator of
Luther, has previously spoken about his choice to hire a black actor and his colour-blind approach to presenting Luther, saying:
“I have no knowledge or expertise or right to try to tackle in some way the experience of being a Black man in modern Britain. It would have been an act of tremendous arrogance for me to try to write a Black character.”

The 27th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, which celebrate the best performances in film and television, aired on Sunday night. Following a string of remote awards ceremonies, the hour-long show was pre-recorded, with nominees connecting over Zoom calls from their homes (or their car, as Bill Camp did).
