University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill trustees have voted to approve tenure for New York Times Magazine journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones after reports she was previously denied it.
NPR reported that the trustees voted on Wednesday to approve tenure for Hannah-Jones, who had been tapped by the school recently to serve as its Knight Chair in Race and Investigative Journalism. The position is usually a tenured role.
Hannah-Jones said in a statement later Wednesday that such a vote would not have occurred without the support from students, faculty and colleagues.

“Today’s outcome and the actions of the past month are about more than just me. This fight is about ensuring the journalistic and academic freedom of Black writers, researchers, teachers, and students. We must ensure that our work is protected and able to proceed free from the risk of repercussions, and we are not there yet. These last weeks have been very challenging and difficult and I need to take some time to process all that has occurred and determine what is the best way forward,” she said.

Yes. Teach Critical Race Theory in Schools. - American Renaissance

Americans are spontaneously organizing to oppose Critical Race Theory. President Donald Trump has a plan to remove it, and calls it “divisive” and “radical.” Florida (and at least three other states) banned it in classrooms, and Governor Ron DeSantis is probably using the battle to prepare for a presidential run. Conservative leaders including Steve Bannon are joining the fight, and formerly unknown activists such as Christopher Rufo have become prominent leaders.
Many progressives and journalists are responding with a variation of the bait-and-switch they use to talk about The Great Replacement. “Critical Race Theory doesn’t really exist, isn’t a threat, isn’t being taught, and isn’t what conservatives say it is. At the same time: Critical Race Theory is a good thing, and we need more.”

First Amendment experts discuss Nikole Hannah-Jones tenure rejection

Nancy Costello, director of the First Amendment Law Clinic at Michigan State University College of Law said UNC's decision stems from "white privilege" and conservatives seeking to ignore history they don't accept.
"It seems to me that this is kind of an attack on freedom of the press because it seems Hannah-Jones is being penalized for producing in-depth, robust journalism that disturbs privileged people," Costello told USA TODAY. "She's writing about truths that privileged people have worked for decades to suppress."
Costello said Hannah-Jones' work is a testament to true journalism and investigation, stating her work revealed "disturbing but true" facts about slavery in America. Costello fears UNC's decision will deter journalists from producing similar investigations deemed "controversial" out of fear of repercussions.
