Annual campfire restrictions set to begin on BLM rivers in Central Oregon

Annual campfire restrictions set to begin on BLM rivers in Central Oregon

Safe campfires are a special part of enjoying the great outdoors, but there can be limits, even bans in some locations.
PRINEVILLE, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Annual campfire restrictions will go into effect June 1 on portions of the Deschutes, John Day, White and Crooked rivers, as well as on BLM-administered lands along Lake Billy Chinook.
Reducing the risk of wildfire helps BLM be a good neighbor in the river canyons, while facilitating commercial recreation and multiple-use opportunities, the agency said in a news release Thursday. The number one goal of the BLM is promoting employee and public safety, and the river canyons present a combination of limited access, grassy fuels that dry out quickly, and steep slopes that allow wildfires to spread rapidly.

Agreement expected this summer for $69-$200M Bethlehem Steel cleanup

Final plans for the environmental cleanup of perhaps the most contaminated portion of the former Bethlehem Steel site in Lackawanna are getting close. State officials told a public virtual meeting Tuesday evening that the Department of Environmental Conservation wants to have an agreement this summer.
The agreement would come after decades of planning and cover the cleanup of around 500 acres of the site on Lake Erie. A cleaned-up Smokes Creek runs through the property on the way to the lake.

The property is filled with some of the worst chemical contaminants coming out of industrial factories. For years, wells across this swath of steel-making waste dumped into the lake have pumped water into a treatment plant to remove chemicals.

Chart source: Jeweller analysis, GIA, excludes Petite Suites and Pink Everlastings is no way to discuss the pink diamond category without the Argyle Mine. Discovered in 1979 and operational since the mid-1980s, the Rio Tinto owned-and-operated site – located 550km southwest of Darwin, in the remote Kimberley region of Western Australia – produced 90 to 95 per cent of the world’s pink and red diamonds before its closure in November 2020.

Northern Nevada weather forecast: Thunderstorms, snow and playa dust

While there isn’t a high chance of significant or unusual weather in Northern Nevada, there’s a chance of a little bit of everything over the next week.
Thunderstorms, rain, snow and wind carrying in dust from the Black Rock Desert all have a chance of appearing between Tuesday night and early next week in the Truckee Meadows and Sierra.
Starting Tuesday afternoon into early evening, a low pressure system puts the chance of thunderstorms at around 10 to 15 percent, according to National Weather Service Meteorologist Marvin Boyd.
It would be the first thunderstorms of 2021, but don’t expect much. Boyd said they likely will stay in the mountains if they strike.

After 37 years, the Argyle Diamond mine in the Kimberley region of Western Australia has closed its doors. Speaking at the time, Rio Tinto copper and diamonds chief executive Arnaud Soirat said: “Fifty years ago there were very few people who believed there were diamonds in Australia.” So how did the Argyle story unfold? We track the history of this ground-breaking mine.

Oak Creek just got a new barbecue restaurant called Smoke Creek

“I came up with it driving down the freeway past IKEA,” Neumann said.
Patrons couldn’t mistake the food served at Smoke Creek, 10166 S. 27th St., as the rich and savory smell of barbecue fills the small lobby — and greatly intensifies when the main door opens.
Behind the building burns the heart of the new restaurant: a custom-built wood-burning smoker. Neumann said it took 70 bags of concrete, two pallets of cinder blocks and three days to construct the smoker. The metal elements were fabricated by a friend.
Neumann called its construction “back-breaking work” but said it was worth it because meat tastes better when smoked with wood instead of gas. The smoker employs dual fireboxes as part of Neumann’s personal design.
