Flashback: HBO's 'Recount' Questioned 2000 Election Results

At the time
Recount was released, it received many glowing reviews. One such review was from Alessandra Stanley of the
New York Times:
“Recount,” an astute and deliciously engrossing film on HBO this Sunday night, retells the tale of Florida in all its bizarre and inglorious moments, from haggling over the “hanging chad” and “butterfly ballots” to the ruckus between the Florida secretary of state, Katherine Harris, and the Palm Beach County Canvassing Board. “Recount” is not satire; it’s a mordantly serious look at a moment when character, political influence and luck fatefully collided.
.The film lays out how Mr. Gore, and the nation, missed a chance to find out for sure, partly through Mr. Gore’s own lack of nerve but mostly because the Democrats were outlitigated and outfoxed by a tougher, more sophisticated team of Republican lawyers and political consultants. ....

State leaders: Tax increase would threaten new - jobs

As new members of the Sumter County commission are pushing for a tax increase that would punish new business, leaders at the state level are igniting their strategy to lure it to the Sunshine State. Ex-Democrats Oren Miller and Gary Search are championing the reversal of the county’s longstanding pro-business strategy, seeking to dramatically raise road impact fees on new homes and businesses countywide. Search has pressed to nearly double the fees from the current 40% of the maximum allowed by law to 75%; Miller wants a 150% increase to the full maximum. Longtime Republican commissioners Doug Gilpin, Gary Breeden and Craig Estep tabled the matter until July after a standing-room only crowd pleaded with them earlier this month to reconsider the severity of the economic fallout. ....

Trump administration gives Medicaid gift to Florida
January 22, 2021 at 1:25 PM EST - Updated January 22 at 1:25 PM
Former President Donald Trump s administration gave Florida’s health-care system one last parting gift before he left office Wednesday to return to his adopted home state.
The Trump administration last week agreed to extend a waiver for Florida s Medicaid program and $1.5 billion in supplemental funding each year until June 2030, which means the move would outlast newly installed President Joe Biden.
Continuing this essential program means Floridians will have access to quality health care when they need it, Gov. Ron DeSantis, a close political ally of Trump, said in a statement praising the decision by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. ....

Retired New York Yankees player and real estate investor Alex Rodriguez is facing new allegations of racketeering, embezzlement and fraud in a complaint filed by his ex-brother-in-law.
Constantine Scurtis is suing Rodriguez, Monument Capital Management principal Stuart Zook, Newport Property Ventures and other companies affiliated with Rodriguez. Scurtis alleges that he was the victim of a “systematic and fraudulent effort” to cut him out of the venture and to “strip him of the future financial rewards.”
The allegations date back to the early 2000s, when Rodriguez began investing in real estate. Scurtis is the brother of Rodriguez’s ex-wife, Cynthia, with whom he has two children. ....
