14 U.S. Senators Sign Letter to FINA President Urging Reversal of Soul Cap Ban

14 U.S. Senators Sign Letter to FINA President Urging Reversal of Soul Cap Ban
14 U.S. Senators signed a letter to International Swimming Federation (FINA) President
Husain Al-Musallam, urging him to reverse the ban on Soul Caps at the Tokyo Olympics on July 20th.
Black-owned company Soul Cap designed their swim caps for “thick, curly, and voluminous hair,” with the aim of increasing the inclusivity of people with natural Black hair in swimming. FINA rejected their request for approval at the Tokyo Olympics on July 2nd.
U.S. Senator
Cory Booker of New Jersey led the letter which comes after FINA has already said it would revisit the decision.

Congresswoman Barbara Lee Advances Over $10 Million in Appropriations Spending Bills for California's 13th District

California’s U.S. Congresswomen Barbara Lee (D-CA-13) and Karen Bass (D-CA-37) are backing legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives to remove former FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover’s name from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Another bill they are supporting calls for probing the racially motivated counterintelligence programs that Hoover organized and oversaw known as COINTELPRO. Under Hoover’s watch, the FBI often relied on extra-legal tactics to accomplish its aims.
Last month, representatives Bobby L. Rush (D-IL-01), Barbara Lee (D-CA-13) and Steve Cohen (D-TN-09) hosted a virtual forum focused on the activities of COINTELPRO. Several African Americans with direct knowledge of COINTELPRO programs testified, including 1960s activists Bobby Seale, Ericka Huggins. The widow of Fred Hampton, Akua Njeri, and their son Fred Hampton Jr. also testified.

Washington, D.C.-(ENEWSPF)- The co-chairs of the Congressional Caucus on Black Women and Girls, Congresswomen Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12), Yvette D. Clarke (NY-09), and Robin Kelly (IL-02) sent a letter to the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in response to the high level of scrutiny and penalization that has disproportionately impacted Black women during the 2021 Summer Olympic Games trials. In the letter, the co-chairs request the IOC to re-evaluate its current policies and standards in consideration of diversity of cultures, races, ethnicity, and socio-economic backgrounds; with particular consideration of the disparate impact the current policies have on women of the African diaspora.

Reps. Bass, Carson, Omar, Tlaib Introduce 'Muslim American Heritage Month' Resolution

Rep.
Karen Bass (D-Calif.) led introduction of a resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives to recognize July as
Muslim American Heritage Month, honoring their contributions throughout our country’s history. The legislation was introduced after a constituent and local Los Angeles community organizer raised the idea of such a designation. Following introduction, the primary authors joined in issuing statements in support of the resolution.
“I’m proud to join my House colleagues in introducing this legislation to acknowledge and appreciate the numerous contributions and achievements of Muslim Americans – both throughout history and today,” said Rep Bass. “We must also recognize and address the persistent discrimination and bigotry Muslim Americans have faced and continue to face in this country. This July, and all year long, we commit ourselves to combating prejudice and doing all we can to support Muslim American communities in California and across our nation.
